Unemployment Extension: Why Republican Senators Are Voting Against It

Nearly 2 million unemployed Americans wait anxiously for the passage of the unemployment extension 2010 bill. Because the Senators are still enjoying their vacation, the stand alone jobs bill is in limbo.

In the meantime, 17 Senators who repeatedly voted to filibuster the stand alone jobs bill will be under the watchful eye of their unemployed constituents. These 17 senators come from states which registered high unemployment rates.

Here are what some of these Senators have to say about their opposition to the unemployment extension 2010 bill.

Fox News quoted Jim DeMint of South Carolina (11 percent unemployment rate):

“…we can’t help people by bankrupting our country, and that is apparently what the Democrats intend to do. This is their fourth year in complete control of Congress,” DeMint said. “And we have suggested and voted on several times an unemployment extension that would be paid for by taking money from the failed stimulus program or other programs, but the Democrats seem committed to add this money to our debt, which is something future Americans will have to pay for. So they’re playing the politics with this game — I mean, with this whole big issue,” he added.

Senator Saxby Chambliss of Georgia (10.2 percent unemployment rate) is quoted by the LA Times.

“President Obama and the Democrats in Congress continue to spend money that they – we – do not have,” Chambliss said. “At some point we have to say “enough is enough.” We have to make tough decisions about spending beyond our means,” he added.

Senator Johnny Isakson also of Georgia shared his thoughts with GBP news.

“To continue to say well we’re going to pay everybody that’s out of work is going to continue to put pressure, upward pressure on increasing the debt and the deficit which ultimately is going to cause higher interest rates, higher rates of inflation, higher rates of unemployment like we saw when we had the misery index of the 1980’s,” Isakson said.

Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky (10.4 unemployment rate), shared his thoughts with Courier-Journal.

“We’ve offered ways of paying for these programs, and we’ve been eager to approve them,” McConnell said. “What we’re not willing to do is use worthwhile programs as an excuse to burden our children and our grandchildren with an even bigger national debt than we’ve already got,” he added.

Senator George Voinovich of Ohio (10.7 percent unemployment rate) released a statement on the unemployment extension 2010 bill picked up by Big News Biz.

“I would support extending unemployment insurance if Democrats would be willing to use some of the estimated $40 billion in unspent stimulus monies to help offset at least half of the stand-alone unemployment insurance extension,” Voinovich said. “My concern is that the Democrats are more interested in having this issue to demagogue for political gamesmanship than they are in simply passing the benefits extension. I came to the table with a fair compromise and the ball is in their court,” the senator added.

The Christian Science Monitor quoted Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee (10.4 percent unemployment rate).

“Senate Republicans have offered several times to extend tax credits, unemployment benefits, and the flood-insurance program without adding to the debt, but these offers have been repeatedly rejected by the Democratic majority,” said Alexander.

“I voted against this bill today because it would add another $30 billion to the mounting debt that we’re going to have to hand over to our grandchildren,” he added.

News Channel 5 quoted Senator Bob Corker also of Tennessee on the unemployment extension 2010 bill.

“My heart goes out to Americans who are hurting because Washington can’t agree on a way to pay for an extension of unemployment benefits. I voted several times to pass and pay for an extension, but I cannot in good conscience continue voting for bills that aren’t paid for,” Corker said.

The Senators are concerned about “future America” but what they don’t see is “future America” may not be here if “America right now” is deleted!! Parents struggling to feed “future America” isn’t being helped right now by their filibustering! They made and allowed this mess, we have to swim in it! It appears all the “southern states have senators who are against it and have the highest unemployment rates!!!!” Voters should remember that come election!

      SpeakUpNJ says:

Why don’t you direct your anger at the real problem here. Obama and liberal out of control spending Democrats do not care about your unemployment woes, they just want your votes.

They would take $30 Billion of remaining stimulus today to fund Cash for Clunkers Number 3 if they thought it would buy votes! Or move $30 Billion of Stimulus this afternoon to fund Union contracted construction for Union bosses retirement condos in Hawaii if they thought they could buy another million Union voters.

They have $1 TRILLION Stimulus dollars to waste. Have YOU seen the effects in the job market? Where IS that money going? Right…but Obama, Pelosi and Reid want to play politics with your unemployment. Republicans would sign the unemployment extension bill today if Obama, Pelosi and Reid would cut their outrageous wasteful debt producing somewhere in their gigantic government building power-crazed spending.

Put your anger where it belongs..on an out of control and absolutely arrogant Administration. Remember they OWN Washington, President, House and Senate…they can DO anything they please…but they always blame Republicans who are pwoerless to stop them…think about it? Why? Does the word CORRUPT ever enter your mind?

        Michael says:

Well the republicans did not mind putting out a 800 billion dollar stimulus before Bush left office, agreed to tax cuts for the rich, they sent aid money to countries over seas and gave no help to the working class. They also did not put up any way to fund any of this. They as they like to say just wrote a check. Its not Obamas fault or the liberals, its all of them in the house and congress for not acting like adults. People are hurting in this country and the govt is trying to help the working class get a leg up. Over 25 million jobs were created under the 8 years Clinton was in office but under the 8 years that Bush was in office they saw only 1.7 million created. Big difference. We also saw the decline of our economic system under Bush and I do not believe Obama or anyone else who could have been President could have fixed this situation in 2 years. And as for them having control of Washington, well Bush had that luxury for the first six years of his presidency and you see what happened there. They got voted out. Not just my opinion but the facts.

The truth is that since Nixon ALL.. ALL the republican presidencies have sky-rocketed the debt and deficit. ALL the democrats have at LEAST brought it down and under Clinton we actually had a surplus for a bit. The Republican talk about the debt etc is nothing more than hollow rhetoric! Period.

        Elizabeth Doyle says:

YOU are totally incorrect. Every single one of my paychecks for the past 40 years has had a deduction for unemployment insurance. The employers rate of contribution is based on the number of people that file claims due to being laid off after 26 weeks or more of work.

    SarahB1 says:

I agree 100 percent with Diana H’s comment. My response to GOP members of Congress: Suggest something other than “leftover stimulus funding” to cover the cost of the unemployment extension. That is the real argument here (IMO). The GOP wants to do everything it can to bash programs backed by Democrats and President Obama.

In the meantime, we unemployed feel the GOP is holding us hostage and using us as a game toy. According to the Congressional Budget Office, every dollar that goes out in unemployment benefits comes back as $1.90 to help the economy.

God help us, the GOP should ever quit caring about itself and do something to help those of us out here in the real world. Yes, we do vote. And, yes, we have good memory banks, especially in the month of November.

    Susan says:

The only thing that will be left for “future America” will be the wealthy kids and grandkids. The middle class and poor will be wiped out by the very same idiots that we vote into office. Funny how they were there for us when they wanted our vote but they have turned their back on us because it doesn’t put any money in their pockets or their cronies pockets. Just wait till thy try to enter those pearly gates. I am from Georgia and I e-mailed the two idiots we have in the Senate several times each. I think that the Republicans made up a standard response so that all the Repub’s have to do is copy and paste. When I e-mailed and told them that their standard rely wasn’t good enough, I haven’t heard from them since. I’ve asked them several times what time they were serving dinner each day for all unemployed Georgians but no response. If and when the extension ever gets passed, I will sill remember them in November. Every incumbent needs to be voted out. Unemployment is an emergency situation and it’s never been the case to take from anywhere else to fund it. Apparently, the Repub’s don’t undestand the definition of “EMERGENCY”.

I don’t understand what is wrong with our government! there are people loosing their homes, cars and going hungry. they say that this unemployment extension is not paid for? this is an emergency here! can they stop to imagine what is going to happen if they don’t pass this bill? can they make welfare large enough for all these people? can they re-open section 8 to be sure all the persons loosing their homes can receive housing? can they expand medicaid benefits to include everyone in the house hold? Wake up people! this country is in for a hard fall if action is not taken. people receiving unemployment still pays taxes! taxes are taken out of the unemployment checks, we pay taxes on everything we buy, homes, land, cars, need I go on! Stop being stupid Senators, get this right and get this passed.

    Jim says:

I was under the impreddion that the money used to bail out the banks, AGI, Wall Street, Fannie & Freddie and the auto industry was to be re-paid.
Well I have 2 questions: (1) how much of this money has been re-paid? (2) what has happened to it?
It has been stated over and over again that $1.00 of unemployment returns $1.65 to the economy. This being the case why can’t the returned money be used to fund unemployment? I am sure it would be a better bang for buck than was paid by the banks, AGI……..

    Rick says:

This is just one more page in the “Republican Utopian Dream Book”. It includes dismantling Social Security (already being proposed by Senator Alan Simpson of Wyoming), destroying Medicare and every vestige of shared social responsibility proposed at any point in our history.

You see, real Republicans come from a different experience. Some October night in their childhood, they went “trick or treating”. They came home rosy cheeked from the autumn night air and poured a mountain of candy from their bag. Their mother said all the children would share in the candy and some would be put away for later. Thrift and sharing didn’t make any sense to them and they never forgot that. One day they found out about the Republican party and it said “that’s YOUR candy. You can eat all of it you want and you don’t have to share it with anyone.”

These republicans are the first to vote for tax DEDUCTIONS FOR BUSINESS’ THAT MOVE THEIR OFFICES OUT OF OUR COUNTRY TO AVOID PAYING TAXES HERE.That raises taxes for you&me.
Until Business stops thinking of the bottom line&employing illegal aliens,,their costs will go up&they will not recover,,,unless they plan on IMPORTING MORE CUSTOMERS.
At some point the republicans will start saying Americans should just MIGRATE ELSEWHERE IF THEY CAN’T FIND WORK HERE.

    Brendad says:

I am a single mother in a single income family and ahave been unemployed since April of 2009, I have looked for a job, went back to school to be better quaified for a job and participated in the GA Works program. I have done everything offered by the government to help me find a job, but I am still umemployed and facing the fact that I will be losing my extended benefits in about two weeks. I also have had no insurance and do not quailfy for help with food stamps. (I make to much in unemployment beneifits for either..lol..go figure)
So in two weeks I’ll be able to quailfy for insurance and food stamps but I won’t have a car to find a job or a place to live. I would rather have the car and a place to live so we need that bill passed. So why don’t some of the senators who make alot of money, take a pay cut and skip the vacations and donate that money to helping us who voted to put them in that position???

    Denise says:

I have one plan of action on election day and up until that point I will be lobbying to get Jim Demint out of office it is easy to talk about bankrupting america when Americans do not have jobs. Out everyday looking for jobs with no money how do i look my car does not run an water and the bus does not accept my hope for a job. If you are gonna cut us off then give us something to live off of .But i guess that descion can not be made till after you come off your vacation tell you what maybe if the senate stop taking salary for one year and give it to Americans maybe we would not bankrupt the country.

Remember their names…Not just in November but always!! Never forget what they are putting us through right now! Any senator that voted against this bill should be followed for their entire political future! And don’t just sit around and complain. Get involved! Start campaigning for their rivals in the future! There is so much we can do. I know it won’t help us pay the bills now, but it will certainly hurt their future and prevent this from ever happening again!

While these politicians are vacationing I am trying to figure out how to make $50.00 stretch to cover $100.00 in bills. The last u/e check has been issued to my husband. I have watched him struggle every day with job hunting only to be declined again and again. We have worked hard all of our lives and until now, never used u/e. We are not lazy, unproductive people. We are medical professionals caught up in this economic mess. My grandchildren are already suffering from Bush politics and the mess handed over to Obama. Taking down their grandparents is not the way to make their future better. Do you have health insurance? Do you get a regular paycheck? Are you able to make your mortgage payment? Walk a day in my shoes and see how real people live right now. Get over yourselves. Why not take a pay cut and help the people who voted you into power.

    Tina says:

I love how ALL OF A SUDDEN the GOP is concerned about the mounting debt. Nobody seemed to be that concerned when bailing out the car companies, bailing out Wall Street or giving ridiculous money for “infrastructure” (really, who cares about smooth roads when you don’t have a job??). NOW, all of a sudden they are concerned about debt while Americans are being ousted from their homes, having their electric and gas turned off and unable to feed their families because the job market is 1 job available for every 6 people unemployed.

It’s time to oust ALL incumbents in the house and the senate. They’re ALL CROOKS. It’s pathetic.

Well, I have contacted my Senator many times as I lost my benefits 5 weeks ago after the first 26 weeks. I was caught waiting for the economy to recover and be brought back to the position that I held for over 9 years, lost my previous job shortly after 9/11 never drew 1 dollar from the Unemployment then. I do understand what they are saying about the debt being left for their grandchildren, as most are over 60 years old and can not open an E-Mail without there grandchildren to help. Our country is already dedicated to turning to a social system with all the baby boomer’s hitting the S.S. system. So these Senators are prepping us for it. The Rep. and Dem. are both playing this game. they know that if they can get us Dependant enough we the People are going top start screaming for this. If I where a company owner I would not hire one more person, I would move my operation to a country that is becoming a capitalist (Israel). We need to separate the Country into smaller unions ones that can have a chance for our children, removing the elite politicians from our system would create a less corrupt system that could be ran by the people. the Fed, has way to much control over my family and to hear them tell me that my child will have to pay for there mistakes make me sick. PPPPSSSS I had three interviews this week and believe that I will be working before the end of the month. I will be walking, hitch hiking, or just bumming rides to get there for I am on empty, in my wallet and gas tank.

I’m an outsider (Aussie) looking in, so the UE doesn’t affect me. But what does amaze me is the supposedly richest & most powerful nation on the planet screws it citizens so much.

Our government & politicians are a clusterf**k too, like anywhere. But when it comes to social services, no-one gets a limited time to receive unemployment benefits.

If you’re unemployed, you get the dole, period. i.e. social security. Plus in Oz all citizens are covered by universal free medical coverage. eg my mum’s a pensioner and needed a triple bypass. All paid for and free, even the air ambulance ride to the hospital.

Sure some people will abuse the dole, but rather a few abuse then to see people starve. I’m just so shocked that the rich and powerful of the U.S. are doing such a callous thing by going on vacation while their constituents suffer. Just the mental stress of being unemployed is enough, let alone the physical stress of going hungry or no roof over your head.

Even if they do pass this bill next week, when it comes time to re-elect them, don’t forget what they did to you.

As my dad use to say to hypocrites “I cannot hear what you say, for the thunder of what you do”

    Get-it-Straight says:

I think some Replubicans have contributed to the long term unemployed.

We need a chance to get our feet in the door to prove we have the ability to perform a job. The negative comments by the Republicans are not helping our situation either. It’s painting a bad picture to Employers about the unemployed and making it very difficult for us to find jobs.

Sharron Angles’ take on the whole unemployment situation is that there are plenty of jobs out there, even in light of what the Labor Dept. has said in the past about 1 job for every 5 jobless person. She says that reducing and paying only partial amounts to the jobless will motivate them to find and accept any job, no matter the pay.

My response to Sharon would be, “Could you breakdown the job categories because I’ve seen tons of Hospitals posting jobs in the medical field but I am not qualified for those jobs. Help me with the cost of the training and I will gladly apply for those jobs. I did send my resume for some of those jobs anyway.”

Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), who said unemployment insurance “doesn’t create new jobs. In fact, if anything, continuing to pay people unemployment compensation is a disincentive for them to seek new work.”

I disagree. In a recession, UI tax revenue falls and UI program spending rises as more workers lose their jobs and receive UI benefits. The increased amount of UI payments to unemployed workers puts additional funds into the economy and dampens the effect of earnings losses. In other words, the unemployment insurance may prevent others from becoming unemployed or taking pay cuts or perhaps reduced working hours (PT). In addition, the money is spent immediately and with demand, there will be more jobs.
Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) said extended benefits undermine the economic recovery because they “basically keep an economy that encourages people to, rather than go out and look for work, to stay on unemployment.”

I disagree. As the economy recovers, with the support of the unemployment benefits, I do believe Companies may expand due to demand and hopefully create more jobs. Require all claimants to submit the weekly work search log.

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) proposed drug testing the unemployed: “A lot of people are saying, ‘Hey, it’s about time. Why do we keep giving money to people who are going to go use it on drugs instead of their families?’”

Okay. But remember, most Companies require a drug test and some do random drug testing. Will the positive results of the test really out weigh the cost of the test? I last heard there are approximately 15 million people unemployed. Will this add to the deficit?

“We shouldn’t turn the ‘safety net’ into a hammock. It should actually be a ‘safety net.’” – Republican Rep. Steve King

Republican Rep. Dean Heller said the current economic downturn and policies may bring back the hobos of the Great Depression – people who wandered the country taking odd jobs… “I believe there should be a federal safety net,” but he questioned the wisdom of extending unemployment benefits yet again to a total of 24 months, which Congress is doing. “Is the government now creating hobos?” he asked.

I remember a saying. “A dead horse won’t pull your wagon no matter how much you beat him.” Think of the unemployed as the “dead horse.” Employers are not hiring the unemployed and the Republicans are lashing out at the unemployed.

For every anecdote about business owners having hiring trouble, there are others about business flatly refusing to hire the jobless. HuffPost has found online job ads that say “NO UNEMPLOYED CANDIDATES WILL BE CONSIDERED AT ALL.”

Our Senate should have the responsibility to lead our Country in the right direction. Scrutinize the real facts before making statements to the media. In this case, the reason(s) why there are so many long term unemployed. Provide the help and guidance to the American People to overcome the crisis and don’t point fingers when our Nation is in a deficit. This is a serious issue which is affecting human life and we hope our leaders will take this up as a #1 Priority for the People of the United States. Create jobs, close the loopholes and encourage Employers to hire the unemployed before shutting off the lifeline needed to shelter and feed our children during this economic crisis.

I agree there is no future if they’re killing the now. And as far as putting money pressure on our kids and grand kids, get real, we all have to pay taxes and die, rather we want to or not. And also we pay to lock-up criminals, trials and housing for prisoners. And its prisoners in jail now that our grandchildren and children will have to pay taxes for and there isn’t a debate where to get the money for that its a must and will get paid!!!! So all that future stress on our kids is just another lame excuse. And FYI, even as a child I’ve never understood why money is a issue and the country in debt when money is made, it’s not a rare gem and hard to find or make. It’s literally made easily. Welcome to our planet earth. Now if I feel like this, imagine how god and Jesus looks at our behavior.

It was ok to bailout banks and wall street, but not the working class? I suggest we stop putting our money in banks, withdraw all of our savings, then start a country wide credit union thats membership is limited to only those who work for their money. I geuss going into debt to finance wars, foriegn aide, and multi-million dollar business bailouts is somehow more important than going into debt for the american citizen. How much more in debt will they be when millions cant pay the taxes that will help us get out of said debt?
On the 4th of July, I showed my respect for those that fought to make this country what it is today, but this country left me feeling ashamed of what it has become!

I’ve stressing out on this issues for weeks. I still say that they cut back on all f$@%king republicans and cut back their paychecks and they will save money and put it all in the unemployement benefits funds. No, instead they are on vacation the A$$hole$ dont care about America in a crisis like this why couldnt they cancel their vacation. It’s just an excuse.

How would all these congresspersons and senators like it if their jobs were eliminated, their sole source of income were eliminated, their houses were taken away – lost to foreclosure, their cars taken away, they couldn’t find a job, they were unable to pay for medical insurance anymore, and had to tap into their retirement fund to live? It’s a leaking boat and there isn’t a life preserver for it! Wonder if other countries think so badly of their citizens?

I’m with Steven first and foremost who said: “I wish I could say something really intelligent about this unemployment thing, but its becoming increasingly difficult to think clearly on one meal every two days. Even the discount groceries are not giving food away. Enjoy your vacation. I expect that you think you deserve it….”

    So,

From Diana H: “The Senators are concerned about “future America” but what they don’t see is “future America” may not be here if “America right now” is deleted!! Parents struggling to feed “future America” isn’t being helped right now by their filibustering! They made and allowed this mess, we have to swim in it! It appears all the “southern states have senators who are against it and have the highest unemployment rates!!!!” Voters should remember that come election!”

From Summer: “I have worked all my life and paid into Unemployment for years!!! So were is all the money I paid into Unemployment… Then some call us lazy drug addicts and want to drug test us..well what about all the people on welfare that haven’t worked a day in there lives and collect a check every month for free…drug test them if you want to drug test someone.”

From Sarah B1: “Yes, we do vote. And, yes, we have good memory banks, especially in the month of November.”

From Susan: The only thing that will be left for “future America” will be the wealthy kids and grandkids. The middle class and poor will be wiped out by the very same idiots that we vote into office. Funny how they were there for us when they wanted our vote but they have turned their back on us because it doesn’t put any money in their pockets or their cronies pockets. Just wait till thy try to enter those pearly gates.”

From PReynaga: “I don’t understand what is wrong with our government! there are people loosing their homes, cars and going hungry. they say that this unemployment extension is not paid for? this is an emergency here! can they stop to imagine what is going to happen if they don’t pass this bill? can they make welfare large enough for all these people? can they re-open section 8 to be sure all the persons loosing their homes can receive housing? can they expand medicaid benefits to include everyone in the house hold? Wake up people! this country is in for a hard fall if action is not taken. people receiving unemployment still pays taxes! taxes are taken out of the unemployment checks, we pay taxes on everything we buy, homes, land, cars, need I go on! Stop being stupid Senators, get this right and get this passed.”

From Jim: “I was under the impreddion that the money used to bail out the banks, AGI, Wall Street, Fannie & Freddie and the auto industry was to be re-paid.
Well I have 2 questions: (1) how much of this money has been re-paid? (2) what has happened to it?

From Christine: “Remember their names…Not just in November but always!! Never forget what they are putting us through right now! Any senator that voted against this bill should be followed for their entire political future! And don’t just sit around and complain. Get involved!”

“It has been stated over and over again that $1.00 of unemployment returns $1.65 to the economy. This being the case why can’t the returned money be used to fund unemployment? I am sure it would be a better bang for buck than was paid by the banks, AGI……..”

From Alex: “You know they’re complete liars and hypocrits because they always vote to extend endless amounts of cash toward the war. There’s always enough money to take out Afghans and Iraqis – never enough money to keep food on the table and roofs over heads in America.”

From Mark: “They could give a rats ass about us, so pleases stop with the bullshit…………..they are all lying bastards and one day they will burn in hell………”

From Randy: “Pass the freakin bill already! If you don’t,You WILL be cursed and don’t expect another term all you losers! I represent the people my a$$!”

From Peter: “At some point the republicans will start saying Americans should just MIGRATE ELSEWHERE IF THEY CAN’T FIND WORK HERE.”

From Tina: “I love how ALL OF A SUDDEN the GOP is concerned about the mounting debt.

“It’s time to oust ALL incumbents in the house and the senate. They’re ALL CROOKS. It’s pathetic.”

From Alex: “There’s always enough money to take out Afghans and Iraqis – never enough money to keep food on the table and roofs over heads in America.”

From Joe: “I say, if they won’t do anything to help the millions of unemployed Americans who now must turn to welfare, then come November, LET’S MAKE THEM UNEMPLOYED!!!”

From Erin: “Just remember, what comes around, goes around.”

From Harry: “I’m an outsider (Aussie) looking in, so the UE doesn’t affect me. But what does amaze me is the supposedly richest & most powerful nation on the planet screws it citizens so much.

“I’m just so shocked that the rich and powerful of the U.S. are doing such a callous thing by going on vacation while their constituents suffer……. Just the mental stress of being unemployed is enough, let alone the physical stress of going hungry or no roof over your head.

“Even if they do pass this bill next week, when it comes time to re-elect them, don’t forget what they did to you.

“As my dad use to say to hypocrites “I cannot hear what you say, for the thunder of what you do”
From Tom: ““The Republicans lecturing us about the deficit is like Evil Kneivil lecturing us about safe driving habits…

“Like another old saying, the few are suffering because of the actions of the many. Stop this short term defecit bullcrap and get this thing passed, you mo-mo’s!!!!”

    From Brent: “PLEASE ALL UNEMPLOYED!!!!
    Visit

sponsored by the National Employment Law Project (nelp.org) They are providing a letter, the names of your Congressional representatives and the direct line to send the letter. The letter is well written and you can even add your personal comments.

    From Get-It-Straight:
“I remember a saying. “A dead horse won’t pull your wagon no matter how much you beat him.” Think of the unemployed as the “dead horse.” Employers are not hiring the unemployed and the Republicans are lashing out at the unemployed.

“For every anecdote about business owners having hiring trouble, there are others about business flatly refusing to hire the jobless. HuffPost has found online job ads that say “NO UNEMPLOYED CANDIDATES WILL BE CONSIDERED AT ALL.”

From Common: “all that future stress on our kids is just another lame excuse. And FYI, even as a child I’ve never understood why money is a issue and the country in debt when money is made, it’s not a rare gem and hard to find or make. It’s literally made easily. Welcome to our planet earth. Now if I feel like this, imagine how god and Jesus looks at our behavior….

“HOW THEY LET US DOWN FOR THE 4TH OF JULY THEY HAVE TO HAVE THE DEVIL IN THEM GOD PULL THE DEVIL OUT ALL OF THEM FROM DEMOCRATS TO REPUBLICANS.”

From Joe: “They have the money for the extension – they just don’t want to use it – nothing but a game to them in election year. Vote them all out…..”

From Joanne S: “To all of you REPUBLICAN PIGS…

Not sure how you all blame Republicans? Read their comments which basically state that they will vote for extension if the Dems will agree to move the money from another funded program such as the unused stimulus funds. There is 40 Billion in unused funds and the Republicans ask that 14 Billion be moved. The Dems said no, they just want to increase the debt. So who do you really blame. More Debt more future problems. Are you all so simple minded and bias that you only blame the Republicans?

    Michelle Clark says:

My biggest problem is how we don’t have money to help our country and fix our selves, but we have plenty of money to give to all these other countries. I get it, these countries need help, and I feel for haiti, but how can we justify send billions of dollars to other countries when our country is so bad off right now. I have never once complained about helping out other countries, but when I can’t provide for my 4 year old son I get a little upset. I am 26 and have been unemployed for the last year. I decided to go back to school and further my education since California currently has no jobs for someone without any degree. I only have 3 months of school left. All I am asking is for just a little more time to finish up my school. As is, I am about to lose the place I am renting because I can not pay the rent. I can’t afford to feed both my son and my self so I go without the food. I might have to quit school now because I can’t even afford to pay the day care to watch my son for 5 hours a day 4 days a week. How is this going to better anyone’s life? All this is going to do is increase the homeless population as well as the unemployed population.

The unemployed are not the cause of the high debt of this country and lose of jobs. We are the result of poor leadership, wasteful spending, and government bailouts, irresponsible oil companies.I keep hearing about the dept that the unemployment benefits will bring to our children and their children. Well hello the children of today may never have a future with out food to eat, a warm bed, and a roof over their heads. The first obligation is to take care of the problems at hand. The Future is just that. You must take care of the people Americans which is what makes America what it is.

I just can’t help thinking how similar this situation is to Exodus in the Bible: Moses going to the Pharoah many times to “let my people go” and being refused every time. He finally gave in after ten plagues, esp. the last one: the death of all of Egypt’s first borns. Is it going to have to take something equally drastic to happen for the RePOOPlicans to finally wake up and extend unemployment?! For heaven’s sake, people are starving, losing their cars & homes and some are even losing their lives!!! I pray every day that God will soften the hearts of our government. Along with the loss of my benefits, I’m gradually losing self-respect and self-esteem the longer I am not working. This is a no-win situation. God bless all you people out there who are unemployed and suffering.

    Paul Peterson says:

America is not the America if the past. The old America people helped each other, even our politicans. Could you imagine 1940′s and 1950′s Senate members not taking care of business, like an important vote on an important bill, just leaving the American people in the lurch, then go on a July 4th vacation ? The Senate of 2010 is a national disgrace. The difference between politicans of the 1940′s and 1950′s is that the present day “politican’s” hold their alligence to lobbyists, big business and anybody who will pay to get them re-elected. The present Senate is full of self interest and a real lack of understanding of the American people.

So few in the Senate truly understand the needs of the many !

Growing up with Ronald Reagan, I have supported the Republican party my entire life until 2008. I voted for 1 Democrat, but after my 26-weeks end this Sunday, MY party has turned their back on me… I will NEVER forget this, and if those idiots in the Senate pass the 38-billion War Bill for Afghanistan (like the House did), and still deny the 33-billion Unemployment Bill, that will set me off! As mentioned, we cannot just spend money we don’t have, but it’s selective with them, because they will pass all kinds of bills without caring. Stop playing your political game that hurts the unemployed, and pass the extension already. While many say things now, how soon they will forget come November. However, I will not, and hopefully we can send these incumbents on another long vacation, a permanent one come January!

    Michael says:

I paid my taxes for 32 years and after six months I was cut off. Where is all the money I paid into unemployment. My job was outsourced overseas by a system the republicans let happen years ago. I have been actively looking for a job but to no avail. And to their comment about adding to the deficit, well lets just say they did not mind sending billions overseas to help with Europe’s economy. One GOP senator says that we will get something on the back side with that deal. Well the American people are getting something on the back side now and its not what we needed. This will add less than one percent of deficit is. They do not mind packing onto the budget to satisfy their agendas but they do not want to help their own people. The deficit grew more under the last three republican presidents than it has under the democrats. Remember the surplus Clinton had when he left office. It did not take George W long to go through that One lady GOP senator said we were the lesser people and would just get even more lazy if they extended this. Well I say you may make us penniless and homeless but we are still registered voters and WE WILL REMEMBER!

And to hurl petty insults at people that lost their jobs is unforgivable-hobos,spoiled,stray animals, lazy and drug addicts!! Both sides just go back and forth. I am so tired of hearing from the Senators that “Their Heart goes out to those unemployed” What do they care? They are eating, have a roof over their heads. They forgot totally who pays their salaries of over 100K a year. Republican Senators worried about children’s future? If the kids are not taken care of today they don’t have a future. This bill needs approved as soon as possible. Many families have been without benefits for over 7 weeks now. Rent, Mortgage payments, utilities, food, gas, insurances, credit ratings all all being compromised due to the neglect of the Senators and House playing games with each other. We need our President to stand up and address this immediately! No more Delays at the expense of the Citizens of the United States who did work – paid years of taxes – Must apply for jobs to even qualify to receive benefits! Did someone forget that requirement! Just so tired of Government officials have lost touch with middle class America. Too high and mighty to see the struggles of everyday life.

Well how in the hell can you turn your backs on the rest of the people in America. My family has always told me that Republicans don’t care about the public but, I tried to give them a fair chance and make my own conclusion. My conclusion is as follows: I can promise you, I will never vote for a (BLANK) (BLANK) Republican again in my life and I will make (BLANK) sure that my children don’t ever think about voting for that stupid, political party in their lives. I will do all I can to make sure that no person of common sense votes for them. I am African American and I tried to be fair but, you can be sure you have made an enemy now.

Senator Voinavh you seem to be worried much more about games being played on the senate floor then concerning yourself with why we all elected you. Ohio elected you for one reason and one reason only that you will look out for our welfare and stay in touch with the people of your state. When I read “ My concern is that the Democrats are more interested in having this issue to demagogue for political gamesmanship than they are in simply passing the benefits extension.

I am amazed this is going on this long. The senate is not thinking it through. Its a political game being played on the backs of those of us who have so little to lose. People are going to take this into the streets soom and I am afraid its going to spill over and someone is going to be hurt or worse. Just look what happened in Oakland California last night and you get a look at what pissed off people look like. I know your are saying this can’t happen. Think again folks. There is no more dangerous animal on the planet than a man or woman who has nothing to lose. If anyone thinks a man or woman won’t put a bullet in someones head to feed a starving child you are a fool. God forbid this ever happens but it could and will if this is not passed soon. Does the senate really think they can control 3.2 million people by the end of July who have lost all means to paying rent or feeding a family. If there were jobs out there we would be working not setting here frustrated and angry.
I know in my case when my country called on me I did not hesitate to inlist in the Navy, but when I need my country a chosen few turned their back on me. That is truly sad folks.

Praying Sister of All in Need says:

I think it says quite a lot when you consider that the republican arena of the senate took a recess/vacation for the July 4th holiday–After debunking the bill.

Now, I don’t have much. In fact, I am a former medical worker turned retail store employee. I UNDERSTAND how painful losing part or even all of your income can be.

But you sit back and you look at all of these people in Washington, in Delaware, in Arizona, in Ohio, in Georgia…Most of these people DO HAVE A LOT! And strangely enough, it is these people who have the mansions, who have the multiple cars, who have the nice insurance, who have the ability to walk in and out of a place of work…It is these same individuals who appear to be so opposed to spending money. Why? They have more than enough.
One phrase comes to mind: “For the love of money is the root of all evil.” They keep spurting the same line about how our grandchildren will inherit this devastasting deficit. Sure. It’s not about our grandchildren. If it were we wouldn’t be cutting down trees at an exponential rate, or using money to fund space programs when we should be spending it on good old planet Earth, or maintaining/waging costly wars (in lives and funding) for over a decade, or cutting spending that supports childhood education and public resources such as libraries. If it were about our grandchildren, the republicians would do the right thing and pass this bill. We all know someone…Maybe more than one someone, who has been affected by the failure to pass this bill. It is a shame. A shame all republicans should wear with pride. I hope they enjoyed their vacations. Some people have not even dreamed of a vacation in years. Why? Because they couldn’t afford one. And they also couldn’t afford to take time from their jobs. But no one cares about the little man. Another shame. Without the little man, the big honcho wouldn’t have a leg to stand on.
My words to all republicans: So what if your bonus this year isn’t so zero-fabulous? A little child will eat, A family will be able to pay their rent, and maybe the forced shoplifters who steal tiny cans of Vienna Sausages can finally retire with some peace.
You say you denied this bill for the sake of our grandchildren. I say without it, you will surely damn them! Americans need this bill to pass and soon. How many more people need to be backed into a corner before you realize that it is WE: the working class (the poor if you will) who pay your salaries? You represent US…Not the other way around. You don’t do right, you don’t get reeelected. It’s really that simple.
Consider the bill. Consider it wisely. One day you may be unemployed, suspended without pay, terminated, homeless, destitute, and/or otherwise. Or someone close to you may be. Assuming of course, you would even care.

The Republicans had control of the government/nation driving it right into the ground. They did not pay attention or care to act on what makes a strong viable growing country. All that matter was the market on Wall street and the few were in the game. Those are not the working class. It never was. US has fallen behind and many of us now face a choice either believe the hype about we are bankrupting our nation by supporting the people who make up the nation or do we make the difficult changes needed to better our chances now and in the future. Competition is fierce and if we continue to behave like sheep and be lead to believe we are the strongest, smartest, and leaders when we can’t even understand how important it is to help out the many who have got caught up in the Big business, wall street, China, destruction then we have more problems than I thought. What other free nation treats their citizens like this? We as a nation owe as much as we can do for our citizens. The history books will not remember all of you who speak of the unemployed during these historic times as the ones who were the problem. Study up on history and you will see, we are transitioning as many before us have. We can either figure how to do it without the drama or we can keep moving forward without the old ideas that only get in the way of positive growth/peace. You can make a difference just by understanding no good review of economics would support ignoring the people who have TEMPORALLY out of work because of something they had no control of. WALL STREET AND THE REPUBLICANS. We will have to spend money to get out of this and inject into our society a new job work force working on the products of the future. We no longer have the same jobs as we did in the 1800′s, and there is a reason for this.

    Dee NY says:

My one question is, Wall Street was left alone for a very long time. No one got in their way. The minute the house of cards began to fall, they having all the control and all the “know it all” environment crashed. If they are so valuable and know everything, as is, then why was it they couldn’t fix this or more importantly prevent this? How can anyone continue supporting the old regime. It is like supporting a lie only because you are feel you are not smart enough or brave enough to say, hey wait a minute you have got to be kidding me.

If Wall street and the Republicans know so much then why haven’t they made any actions to fix this. I’m not hearing anything from them. There is a reason for this. It is very hard to keep saying hey I’m right when the obvious is right out there front and center. How can anyone support the republican party when most of their talk is about how they will not help out the American working class citizens. What does this say to you. They can not govern a nation if all they do is destroy the entire working class with more stratification. No thanks to that. I want the American dream back front and center as it should be for all who are citizens.

Sirs I have never put my resume away and settled on the couch. I apply for all of the jobs that are in my area of expertise. I have had only two interviews in one year after applying to hundreds of jobs. The competion is stiff at over ten percent unemployment in California. This week I went on the third and final interview for a job and I am waiting for thier decision. Maybe it will pan out his time or maybe it will not like the last time. I need this extesion to get me by until someone will hire me. I have many connections that will help me to get a job at thier company but none of them are hiring, simple as that. I suggest that you and your buddies in congress start helping out business men by cutting their taxes (flat tax) and start luring companies back to CA and the USA! We want to work but WE NEED JOBS!!!! WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE!!!

I have no confidence in the American voter. They will put the GOP back into power in late 2010, and America will crash yet again, and somehow the Democrats will be blamed for it, and Americans will believe it.

I am so tired of listening to this business as usual crap. Perhaps if President Obama would make good on his campaign promises. Namely, removing the income tax cap. If there were no cap on income tax the money raised would easily pay for this extension.

The only reason this won’t happen is the lobbies and special interests own the congress.

We need to recall every senator that voted against this extension for malfeasance. The are ignoring their duties to benefit themselves and their rich cronies.

I’m with ya Rick “This country is doomed, and frankly I’m hoping it does fall apart.”

At this point in time I see as a hardworking citizen where I stand with this government. I don’t want to go back to the status quo.. Been there done that…

If I have to suffer then all should have to suffer.. I pray every night the dollar collapses and those at the top fall from their trees right into our laps.

Of course I won’t be extending a friendly hand I’ll be kicking them in the head.

Time for a change and the new face doesn’t employee Democrats or Republicans.

Ya know if I’ve got nothing to lose or nothing to gain I might as well join the Islamic ranks. Then we can all be one poor nation. I can’t stomach much longer living with these upper class snobs… Christian’s even… :) Lordy Lordy… Christian’s. Supposedly two billion Christian’s? What a joke.

One other thing, couldn’t we just use some of that wasted foreign aid to help our own citizens? Someone please tell me why the rest of the world deserves all our aid but our own people don’t? I don’t understand?

From where I stand I was a hard working, dedicated, loyal citizen all my life and now I’m tossed aside in the name of democracy? What a joke. You people against an extension I got something for you to chew on while your contemplating what to do with us next…

Damned must have been how the Jews felt just before they started rounding them up and sending them to the gas chamber? Don’t you people voting no to an extension have any balls to go along with your self centered asses? If you did you’d gas us and put us out of our misery… You people don’t have the backbone to run this country.

    Eat shit and die….

    Ron Litton says:

As long as we are supporting any foreign country or any foreign citizen with American Taxpayer money –there is an obligation to support the unemployed that have been put upon by Banks, poor Federal regulators and by the stubborn inept Congressmen and women AND the prick Senators of either party who will not help CITIZENS of this country.

No money should go outside of our borders until we help AMERICANS.

WHY IS THIS HARD TO UNDERSTAND OR ACCEPT?

  • 75
    Ron Litton says:

Another issue on unemployment is MONEY. Why cant the SBA and Congress get money into the hands of small biz?? That is what is needed.

This morning I saw on the news that the credit score of 25% of Americans now is below 599. That is considered bad. You know who those people are ??? They are small business people and the unemployed who have the skills to start and grow small biz – but now because of the dumb ass “credit Scoring ” system Banks will not loan them anything.

The wheel keeps going round and round – Congress and BO are just too stupid to understand how the country really works OR DOES NOT WORK.

To whom it may concern, i Mary Oliver of Millbrook Alabama is very upset along with other people about the Senate will not vote on the passing of the unemployment because the house is gone on VACATION now what does that say about the SENATE which is put in the house to represent the people, we voted on you people to speak for us but that is not being done. Is it still WE THE PEOPLE OR IS IT WE THE SENATE? I speak for the people we need someone for us not later but now, It is to many people that are not working and children, houses, cars etc. that is indanger of being lost and that is not fare to the people. THE GOVERMENT IS WORRIED ABOUT WAR OR TERRIS ATTACT ON THE UNITED STATES BUT ITS GONNA BE TERRIS ATTACT IN THE UNITED STATES because no one have the people of the UNITED STATES in there mind at all. Someone Please tell me how do we soppose to make it with no life line and most of all NO SUPPORT From THE GOVERMENT. I QUESS WE THE PEOPLE DO NOT MATTER WE DO NOT MATTER AT ALL WE DO NOT MATTER AT ALL. I WILL BE WRITTING EVERYDAY UNTIL SOMEONE HAVE A HEART FOR THE PEOPLE AND NOT THEMSELVES.

    Janet says:

Enough already people! The DEMOCRATS ARE IN NOW! And what has been done for us BY THEM! Try to understand that what we need here (And this horrendous jobless situation is the proof) is a new PARTY. The “People Party”. Because all the Republicans and Democrats are doing right now is playing politics with our lives! The President presents the “Bill” with a whole big bunch of JUNK added to it. This way, the GOP will surely knock it down. Thus, making the Republicans look like the bad guys! He Knows This! The Republicans shoot the bill down to make the President look like he cannot accomplish anything, and that makes the Democrats look bad! Do ya get it now? We are their collateral damage in the “Game of Politics”. We must all do our homework and vote ALL INCUMBENTS OUT in November. No matter what Party the represent. They have all failed the tax-payers of America and do not care. Why? Because they are all so rich. This does not touch them really. The only thing we can do to them is vote them out and take away their POWER. We can never take away their wealth though. They will always have that! It’s called “getting fired for a job not done!” Not the same reasons we got fired though, huh?!?!?!

I love the comment by the guy who lost his unemployement: (Growing up with Ronald Reagan, I have supported the Republican party my entire life until 2008. I voted for 1 Democrat, but after my 26-weeks end this Sunday, MY party has turned their back on me… I will NEVER forget this.) Well I remember too: we can not compete with foreign manufacturers and anyone who is not trained and educated in the new technologies ….well, it is too late for them so we must become a service providing country. well…that was Ronald Regan while he was president and so full of himself as I watched ( virtually ) my whole field of electronics go to the pacific rim…because they do so much better of a job of it. Well….. I remember and don’t drive a toyoto to this day. I love to see “in god we trust” plates on a toyota car, you know since the japanese don’t believe in that diety!!! What kind of person trusts someone from around the other side of the earth …that hates their religion and presumably loves their money but not them, but doesn’t trust their neighbor…an american that is who

    Michael says:

The Comment made by Janet makes good sense except for one part. Obama did not introduce the bill and the pork added in was done by both sides of the House and Senate. Obama does not see it till he signs it. Not all of the Incumbents are bad but I do believe in term limits and very much against having what I like to call professional politicans. Let them do one or two terms then out you go and let some new ones in with fresh ideas who have not been payed off by the lobbyist yet. I am all for voting out everyone of them that voted no on this bill. They make on an average of 174 thousand a year and their pension and healthcare are paid for by us. They get that sweet deal and then have the nerve to kick us when we are down. I used to support the Republican party years ago but I changed my opinion under the last admin. The GOP senators that are voting no now had no problems voting yes when Bush wanted unemployment extensions and they voted to spend money on the war with not way to pay for it. The most recent was the billions they sent to help out Europe’s economy and today they did an extension of aid to Haiti without showing a way to pay for that. I know the folks in Haiti have been through hell and need all the help they can get but we need help here at home. They are using this to try and make their election chances stronger and to make the current admin look bad. Bad part is we are caught in the middle of their sick little game.

I could careless what these GOP turds think. They are holding people’s rent money, electricity bills, & food from children’s mouths. If they can spend trillions on invading a country & bailing out crooked coporations, they can bailout destitute Americans (who are actively looking for jobs). People are literally living in their cars now because of these low life politicians. I cannot wait to vote these Republicans out of office. If you are reading this & you are a Republican politician, you better take notice Buck! We are going to vote you out of power where you cannot do anymore damage. Sick’em Obama!!

I would love for one of these individuals who voted against it to try and live off the $52.00 I have my bank account. I still have to pay bills, rent oh and feed my two children. You try to get food stamps but they are so far behind and swamped that I won’t even be interviewed till September, and if you call to have an organization help you with bills their only reply is there are no more funds. I say we take away their money and give it to the ones who truly need it, then lets see how long they can hold onto their houses, vacation homes, childrens needs. I can’t believe people who make so much freakin money are the ones to tell us who have nothing if we can have help or not. I even have a college degree and still there is nothing out there, per Walmart I am too qualified to work there. We can pay their lazy asses to go on a 10 day vacation but they fight over helping their FELLOW AMERICANS, who are the future!! If they don’t stop the damn whinning and spending useless money on the Senate there will not be a future!

The Republicans from the south still think the civil war is not over. Look at them them, brought the economy down to it’s knees so they can work people for 10 cents a dollar. Sure the dont want you to collect unemployment. Their prfit is not what they expected. They want to beak you so they can work you for food like we some times see at the intersections WORK FOR FOOD !!!!!!!. Wake up. Get them out. This your chance.

I have to agree with you completely. I live in a state where the Republican governor and senators tried to take down medicaid and did not care that it would literally kill people. I contacted one of the senators and expressed my displeasure about his voting no on the unemployment and he responded with that he was working on creating jobs and if I wanted a job with benefits like his then maybe I should run for a public office. What a moron. That is not going to help people now. These people need help NOW! I used to always support the republican party but after 8 years of Bush and this fiasco I can not in good faith vote that way anymore.

    John says:

Sue, Also note that if you have been paying for years for unemployment you have not been paying much, Your Employer pays a percent on the first $7000 dollars for the federal unemployment. This amount is about $56 dollars a year, TOTAL. Each states program is a little different but usually about the same and usuaully the employer pays. You could argue that if your employer did not pay the $56 dollars you would get that $56 as pay. Same with the State cost.

So now let just say that you or your employer were paying 3 times more to the state then to the Fed program. That means you and your employeer are paying 4 x 56 or about $224 per year for unemployment insurance. With that said State unemployment is usuaully 26 weeks then it kicks over to the fed paying for 26 weeks for a total of 52 weeks. Most unemployment checks are over $200 dollars. You do the math. That means any one who has been on unemployment has received more than they will pay in if they are on umployment for just 26 weeks. There have been several extension and this vote was to extend it past 99 weeks or almost 2 years. After that extenison then what. When do you stop?
