Anger is being expressed by many Americans, both employed & unemployed, at the Senates callous treatment of the jobless. The Senates refusal to pass the unemployed extension’s bill before going into recess, has hit home hard for those who lost or are about to lose their unemployment benefits after the 26 week period.
Political observers expect that when the Senate convenes again on July 12th, and with the replacement of the late Sen. Robert Byrd, the Democrats will have the numbers to pass the unemployment extension benefits bill.
Once the legislation is passed, many Americans will once again start to receive much needed unemployment checks, and possible further hardship will have been alleviated, for the time being.
Pundits are suggesting that once people start to receive their checks and there’s “food on the table”, then when November elections come around, this current debacle will have been forgotten and the good citizens will vote for their party as they normally have in the past.
It has been suggested though, that the affairs of the last 3 weeks has created a fracture within the electorate, and that those in government that opposed or delayed the passing of the unemployment extension legislation will be held to account.
As one reader wrote, when the politicians are pork barrelling in the lead up to the elections, remember the old adage of “I cannot hear what you say, for the thunder of what you do”, or “did” in this case.
HD from Jeffersonville, Indiana wrote in and said “The citizens of America have to come together and vote all incumbents out. This has to be done if the people are to retake control of their government.
A strong statement must be sent to Washington and our vote is the only way to do it. Don’t vote party lines. Don’t vote for your buddies Uncle. Vote OUT all incumbents…. What do you say people? Can we make a stand or do the majority of us feel safe enough economically to not join the movement?”
It remains to be seen if those in the electorate who have been directly or in-directly affected by the stalling of the unemployment extension benefits bill, will keep that in mind and vote accordingly

I am a republican that has worked for the past 30 years and have been out of work for a year and a half. I need unemployment to keep my house and eat. If republicans keep this up I will remember this come November. I may be unemployed but I still have my vote.
I have come to the conclusion that our once great country is GONE! our government can pass an open ended trillion dollar stimulus slush fund without even knowing what it will be spent on! I’m convinced now that our president want to destroy our nation. (call me a freak but my god it looks that way) our politicians are criminals and stealing from us and telling us to get bent when we need help… I’M DONE! LOST IT ALL… been unemployed for about 8 months now.. never before in my life have i been without a job.. now! its over…. I give up… pound sand all incumbents!!!! dems and republicans alike…. if we don’t get some good people in office in the next few years well what’s the point… its already to late for most even unemployed for a little wile much less 99rs… too many have gone without a check and they didn’t hardly make it threw last month.. next moth all will be on the street..
Americans will absolutely not forget this at election time, or any time soon.
It is a crisis for the millions of unemployed Americans and their families. Most employed Americans see clearly the impact on friends, neighbors and relatives as well as the staggering cost of NOT paying unemployment benefits. They also see the sheer heartlessness of elected officials putting politics before people. It is so against the values of most Americans that it will be remembered in the fall and for years to come.
I am not lazy. I do not do drugs. I have paid my taxes for over 30 years. I pray & I vote.
I lost my job last fall and have been looking desperately for a job. It is NOT that I am not looking & I did not lose my job due to wrongdoing-it was a cutback in my company.
I am 50 years old and taking care of an ill parent who lives with me. I am out of options financially. My only income has been unemployment. I have used all credit & savings. I have an interview in 2 weeks and no money to get there. My rent is late now & utilities overdue.
Without an unemployment extension I will lose my house, as my landlord needs the payment to pay the mortgage. The landlord will miss at least on month of rent if I have to move out because it takes time to find a new renter. My parent will have to go to a nursing home, which will cost the government (through the VA or Medicaid) much much more than the unemployment I was getting. I will be homeless as I have no other family.
I also have medical issues that I have not had the money to address. Any care or food that I would get would have to be government or charity & those resources are extremely limited. With no home or car it becomes even more difficult to find a job. No address, no clean clothes no phone.
I was earning over 70000 a year before this. I did not “blow” the money on luxuries. I was caring for two other ill relatives who have since passed away. It took all of my savings, but did keep them from being a “burden” on the government.
I have been a responsible citizen and I do not want welfare. I don’t like being on unemployment but I did work for 30 years and paid into the “unemployment insurance” system and paid taxes. If you paid for medical insurance and your claim was denied in spite of desperate need you would be outraged-but that is what is happening to the million plus unemployed Americans.
I did not vote to bail out banks, automakers, or to send so many jobs overseas. I did not vote to give oil & gas companies tax breaks and incentives.
Now that I am the one who needs help our elected officials have been, especially the Republicans, are saying “NO”.
A very sad day in America
I live in Las Vegas and could not in good conscience ever vote for any Republican. I entered the voting process when Obama ran, it was the first time I ever voted. I and many like me will not turn out to help the Democrats this election.
We resent crucifying the unemployed and poor over a political dispute over stimulus money, that issue could be brought up later not while holding the unemployed hostage.
It is time to vote out the Reptillian (Republicans) out of office. Dont go Rouge go Vote. Show them that the vote is the determining factor over all. let them go on Umemployment this November. VOTE, VOTE,VOTE,VOTE. Let the Process be known, VOTE.
Ernest C. Hill
I have been working for the last 38 years without having to sign up for unemployment. I was laid off May, 2009 and have not been able to find a job. We paid off our house while I was working, but there is utilities, food, medical bills, etc. I lost my medical insurance because I did not have the money to pay it and my prescriptions are over $400.00 per mo. I need the unemployment check to help pay bills until I can find another job. Please vote on the extension and pass it. I have been following the votes of the House of Representatives and Senate from and I will vote accordingly in November.
A former associate had a great saying” When In Doubt, Vote Them Out”! Every incumbent MUST go! I know people have a tendency to say “Our Govenore/Senator/ongressman is different” – they are not! Let’s take this country back from those who represent the interests of corporate America over that of the people. It is our country and our turn to send the message!
They (government) are quick to respond but, when it is time to reverse their mistake, they take their time. I am paying for the known mistakes of the financial industries practices, and now paying for someone that reports employment numbers that are not totally true; withholding all the evidence should get someone in jail for all the pain and suffering that has been caused from this moral decision…..along with the financial industries practices that put us and the world in this situation…..greed, non-existent morals and ethics. I am in this situation because of other people’s decisions based upon being overly greedy….NOT COOL.
HISTORY WILL ALWAYS REPEAT ITSELF. THE THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING TODAY COINCIDE WITH THE EVENTS THAT LED TO THE GREAT DEPRESSION. 2 YEARS AGO, THE GOVERNMENT RAN A CAMPAIGN TO GO AND TEACH. TEACH WHO? TEACH WHAT? WHERE IS THE STIMULUS FUNDING FOR SCHOOLS TO HIRE MORE TEACHERS. WHERE ARE THE JOBS THAT WERE PROMISED? NOW THE ONE THING THAT THOSE IN THE DEPRESSION DID NOT HAVE, IS BEING TAKEN AWAY, BECAUSE OF THE SAME OLD POLITICS IN WASHINGTON. IF THEY WERE VOTING ON EXTENDING CREDIT TO BANKS OR AUTO COMPANIES, OR BETTER YET…UPS, I WOULDN’T BE INTERVIEWING FOR A JOB THAT PAYS $8.50 AN HOUR. NOW…IF THAT IS WHAT IHAVE TO DO DO TO TAKE CARE OF MY FAMILY, THEN I WILL! I WILL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES. MAYBE OUR POLITICIANS IN WASHINGTON SHOULD DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET THISPASSED******EXPEDITIOUSLY!!!!!!! I PROMISE ALL WHO READ THIS. I WILL NOT VOTE FOR AN INCUMBENT-REPUBLICAN OR DEMOCRAT. I WILL REMEMBER!!! I WILL REMEMBER!!!!! AND SHAME ON THOSE THAT FORGET THIS NOVEMBER!!!! REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER R-E-M-E-M-B-E-R I-N N-O-V-E-M-B-E-R
I am a lifelong democrat and fed up with them along with the republicans… they should all sit in a room and do what needs to be done…. don’t come out till it’s settled. The 1.2 Million unemployed US Citizens are without money to pay bills and buy food for their families today…. How is that going to help the economy? Oh yeah and that is going to grow by over 200,000 each week. Great Job Politicians.
I have worked since I was 13 years old and even worked while going to college. This is the longest I ever gone without a job and I will let my VOTE be heard in November. The Republicans can let other pork barrel spending go through but Mitch McConnell and his cronies block help for the millions of unemployed individuals losing their homes and facing extreme hardships.
These are the same people who voted against health care when they get the best health care in the nation all paid for by our tax dollars.
Vote Republicans out in November (except Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe who have both shown great strength in resisting McConnell’s tactics to block anything put forth by the President or Congress.
My vote will be against ANY incumbent in Indiana!!!!!!!!!!!! And, I will not vote Democrat or Republican.
I am ashamed to be an American today. I directly lost my got due to the banking crisis. Then my home. Now you can have what ever is left you selfish ignorant politicians.
May you suffer the pain that I am now along with millions of other people. You are nothing but maggots and now you will plenty of food soon.
The Democrats are beyond despicable. They vote for a pay as you go. They pass a $1 trillion stimulus bill and what do they do?
They sit on the stimulus: still $415 billion they won’t use for our benefits.
They want to walk us deeper into debt. They have to go.
It’s amazing to me how it seems to be the same voters who elected these people in office that are now up in arms with these government officials that they put in office! During the elections the red flag that people should have been paying attention to was the word: “CHANGE”. That one word was repeated over and over again many times but the people blindly accepted it hook, line, and sinker. Every single time I heard that word during the campaign, one image would keep popping up in my head. That image was of me, standing on a corner holding out a tin cup along with thousands of other people on different corners with all of us chanting: CHANGE, CHANGE? CHANGE! Well, here we are!
The issues are many, all will not be forgotten. The court allowing drilling in our oceans, the President wanted it stopped until the oil com. can address the QA to a disasters ie BP.
Unemployed have been referred to as lazy, drug addicts, and not important enough to get an extension.
Immigration President going on the record he wants the Senators to address this. Republicans say no again. They find it more beneficial for states to open the door to dividing their people and injecting unconstitutional actions into their governing.
No job creation plan from the Republicans. Only special interest ie wall street is doing well, that is because it is not effected by if Americans are working but rather business is working over seas.
Education is shot. Most other free countries are doing much better than we are. Why?
None of this and more will not be forgotten in November. The party of No is not effective in the 21st century and we as a people need to remember this if we want to move forward in the future or fall like Rome.
The republicans do not see the American people as needed or valuable, if they did they wouldn’t get so sick when you ask them to take a look at social issues and the survival of the American people.
The party of NO will see in November that the crowds will come out in opposition to them. Too many different issues all being ignored or dealt with no representation of the American people. All of what they have done and not have done will be the force behind the voting against the republican party.
Let’s all show up in Washington! What the heck use my credit card can’t pay it now anyway. Shame on all of you rich fancy congress. You spit on all of us ” Small People” you are no better than BP.
I lost my benefits the end of may… Its been almost 6 weeks since i’ve seen a dime… My bank account is negative 300 and i’ve loaned money from literally every member in my family just to feed my kids and pay my bills hoping that GOD hears my prayers and this extension gets passed… This situation that is going on in Senate absolutely is ruined my life and millions of Americans… This country is based for the people now wat is it about? We as americans need to show our power and vote these heartless idoits out of office… I will make it my business to vote come november and everybody that i know will do the same!!!!
I don’t have to elaborate very much all there is to be said is YES I WILL REMEMBER COME NOVEMBER!!!
Why the push to vote out ALL incumbents??? Look at the House and Senate votes on this! Vote the Republicans out in November (except Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe). It’s a no brainer to see where the Republican loyalties lie. Trickle down economics is so yesterday.
I’ve decided to vote a straight democratic ticket come Nov. All because of the party of “NO ! “has only their deep pocket friends best interest in mind and have forgotten the people who voted them in and their best interest
