Unemployment Extension Debate Continues: Have Your Say

From our previous posts it is evident that many Americans wish to vent off over the unemployment extension bill and its delayed passage through both the House and the Senate.

Has the Party System Failed America?

Will People Remember Come November?

Why Republican Senators Are Voting Against It

What to Do When Unemployment Extension Benefits Run Out?

We invite all readers to voice their views, whether for or against the unemployment extension legislation. As small a voice as this site is among all the big news sites, your views will still be read by thousands of fellow Americans each day. Keep making your message loud and clear to those that govern.

As one reader from Georgia wrote “I keep returning to this site, though it depresses me mostly, saddens and angers me…. I keep returning and usually I don’t have much to express when compared to what others have written…..Bianca … maybe I shouldn’t even attempt to express anything to you because I’m still sitting here in the library full of rage yet wanting to cry at the same time….Just … hold on … everyone”.

“But you sit back and you look at all of these people in Washington, in Delaware, in Arizona, in Ohio, in Georgia…Most of these people DO HAVE A LOT! And strangely enough, it is these people who have the mansions, who have the multiple cars, who have the nice insurance, who have the ability to walk in and out of a place of work…It is these same individuals who appear to be so opposed to spending money. Why? They have more than enough.

A reader from Georgia notes “One phrase comes to mind: “For the love of money is the root of all evil.” They keep spurting the same line about how our grandchildren will inherit this devastating deficit. Sure. It’s not about our grandchildren.

If it were we wouldn’t be cutting down trees at an exponential rate, or using money to fund space programs when we should be spending it on good old planet Earth, or maintaining/waging costly wars (in lives and funding) for over a decade, or cutting spending that supports childhood education and public resources such as libraries.

If it were about our grandchildren, the Republicans would do the right thing and pass this bill. We all know someone…Maybe more than one someone, who has been affected by the failure to pass this bill. It is a shame. A shame all republicans should wear with pride.”

Whether the unemployment extension legislation passes on Monday or not, it’s clear a divide is opening up in America’s voting public. Can this divide be healed by swift and decisive action by both parties in approving the unemployed extension bill? Or is it too late for that now? And both parties will now suffer for their neglect of America’s middle class?

Hello all, I am an unempoyed mother af a 23 month old boy. My husband is in the AF and by the grace of God we have survived. We have had all utilities cut off at one point or another these past few weeks. What’s next ??? Our home will be in jeapordy? Many employed people have comminted that why not just get a job and stop the whining over the unemployment extention. If it were that easy… Trust me, I would be working. Arizona is not the easiest state to live in and that alone says a lot. Our son is still very little to understand anything that is going on and Im greatful for that. All he knows is to aak for food when hungry, milk or juice when thirsty and telle when he needs a diaper change. His luvs have become store brand ( nothing wrong with them) his juice has become water and his meals have been Top Ramen. It beaks my heart but what else can I or my husband do??? Enough is enough!

    Dear Elected Officials:

July 12th is a few days away—-I expect you to do what is right—-extend benefits to include a Tier 5.

If you do not—then I will do my part in helping to vote you out—this year or next—you will be gone. The unemployed across America will not forget your “no vote.”

So! Do what is right by those in need.

We are sick of people acting like we DON’T want to work. Call me and give me a JOB! I will be all over it. In the meantime pass this damn extension. Its not like we won’t be right BACK here in November! NO way in hell this insanity will be over by then.

I have been on many of these sites posting my commments in the last few weeks hearing the same hurtful issues that the repubs have put the UNEMPLOYED AMERICANS through. I urge everyone to know that these so called politicians will get what is well deserved “BACK” to them. It may not be them, it can be on of their family memebers at such, but, it will happen, you can bank on it !!!! So, for what ever it is worth, I pray that we all just hang in there, and justice will be done. This bill shall “PASS”

I lost my job of 29 years. I started collecting unemployment. You can also get out there and work through temp agencies. This is what I did. Working for temp agencies gives you an opportunity to maybe get hired full time. The last temp job I had I got hired full time. I am a 50 year old female. I think 26 weeks is long enough to find a job. Working temp jobs also gets you out there in case there are any “word of mouth” opportunities for other available jobs.

    Susan says:

ALL unemployed are really hurting by not getting the extension passed. With jobs so scarce finding a job is not easy. I worked for 20 years at my job and was let go because the compnay was going to outsource to save money. So we were all let go. Nobody will hire me saying I am too over qualified or have been unemployed too long or I am too old. I have used up all my savings, used up my 401k, maxed all my credit cards out just to make ends meet and I am one of the 99er’s who now gets nothing. I am unable to pay for any bills now and am trying to scrape to pay my mortgage this month. Now without any UE checks I will not be able to pay even my mortgage next month and it will just be time before I am evicted and in forclosure. I am a cancer survivir and rely on daily pill to keep cancer away and I have no money to buy medicines now. And it gets worse day by day. It makes me sick to think how all the rich uncaring senators can let us all be in financial ruin and jeapardise our health. They have no concept as to what our situations are like and they are so far removed from everyday reality it makes me sick. Maybe cancer is better than going through all this.

The real problem is that Congress is not directly affected so they

much you care about “we the people”!

It is kind of hard to blame republicans though when Obama built in financial funding for his presidential library in Illinois to be paid in part by the stimulus bill. Just goes to show that Democrats are just as corrupt as Republicans.

    JMF,
I have been registered with 3 different temp agencies beginning in Sept 2009. To date not even 1 temp job. They have sent me on 1 interview and it turned out that it did not match my skills. Oh yes there was another position they talked to me about, it fell through the Friday before I was supposed to start.
There are National Temp agencies that are closing down offices.
Please confine your comments to things you actually know.

I have two kids and a baby due in December. I lost my job in january, and have been looking for a job since. Nevermind the fact that its virtually impossible to find a job while pregnant. My unemployment checks are the only thing keeping us from being completely destitute and homeless. How is bringing millions of people to the brink of extreme poverty going to help things? All its going to do is put a huge strain on the social service programs that are being cut left and right! This makes NO SENSE to anyone but those who dont worry about the economy or how much money they make. I have never in my life applied for food stamps, housing, or WIC, but I am now forced to find alternative ways to support my family and keep them eating. Clogging those systems will not do anyone any good. I used to consider us a “middle class” family, and now I see that was just a dream. There are the law makers, the rich, and the rest of us. As long as they get their kick backs from corporations…to hell with the rest of us! I am truly shocked and appalled by the irresponsible politics going on in our country. You all should be ashamed of your greedy selves.

    marcus says:

    Hi jmf,
Depending on the type of temp job you are looking for will you be so lucky. I have registered with many temp agency’s and they all say the same thing, “we don’t have anything in” I was looking for anything, customer service, administrative and data entry. Here in GA it may not be as easy to get a temp assignment as in your state so no 26 weeks is not enough depending on where you live and what your state’s current unemployment rate is.
I agree with you that it is a good opportunity but if there are no jobs then what would you suggest people do? Networking helps but again those with jobs can only do so much with “word of mouth”. Sometimes word of mouth can lead to something like in my case, I did get a long-term temp assignment an hour and a half from my home starting July 12th; my friend who is Director of HR has an associate going on Maternity leave and because she and I worked together before offered me this assignment because she knew of my UE situation but again I just got lucky that I knew someone but for many this may not be the case.

I am glad you found a temp job but had you not found one you to would be voicing your disgust and anger like the rest of the millions still unemployeed. Plus most temp assignments are short-term with no benefits and then your back on UE. Don’t be so quick to throw those who are and have been looking for work under the bus just because you got lucky and got a temp job. Good for you and I hope it does turn into a full-time job but if not then you will be right back where you started collecting UE for 26 weeks, and maybe this time you won’t be so lucky getting another temp or FT job. Just keep that in mind because temp assignments are just that temporary.

I still pray every night for those of you who are still looking and waiting for the passing of the extension because I know what it means to you and your families to have that little bit of something coming in. I wish all continued hope and faith. And even thou I am returning to work I still plan to make my voice heard during the coming elections in November.

I have a problem when we can be spending billions in the Middle East sponsoring the governments dragging their feet instead of using this money to help our economy.
The people making decisions are rich. They have no idea how it is when you do not have funds to pay your rent or for the basic necessities.
I’m retired so my comments are not self serving.
I’m the one helping my neighbors renegotiate a mortgage modification because it is so complicated they are at a loss how to handle the applications. The claim that the stimulus funds are not being used it is because the people needing the money do not know how to apply for it. Give them a break. Simplify!
Get the darn Tier 5 up for the citizens that need it. Pelozzi….go home instead of being a road block! Retire…we are sick and tired of you.

I have been unemployed for about 11 months. I have put in 100s of resumes and applications. If there was work that would pay my bills…i would be working, I went from 3k a month to about 1k. Do the math!!! Why would I NOT want to work? I have given up everything but the roof over my head and food. I am not lazy and living in the lap of luxury here. As far as temp agencies are concerned…IF they have work I can do, it is just that, temporary and once the assignment is over, its over..then you are hung out to dry with nothing once again. McDonalds? They are hiring part time students here. I worked for 20 years, had my last job for 12 of those years, and lost my job to downsizing. I paid my dues, paid my taxes and paid into unemployment. I understand it isnt a “right,” but since Ive already paid for it, it should be. Pass this extension before we have 15 million people living on the streets!!!

I am sadden as an American to see what this world is coming to when people are heartless enough to vote against something like this. This is the bread and butter to most people. It already isn’t a whole lot to begin with, and now they’re voting not to give us anything at all. I have been unemployed for a year and a half now, and trust me it’s not that I don’t wanna work. I would much rather be getting a real paycheck than waiting on unemployment benefits (not to sound ungrateful) This is how I’ve been paying my rent and utility bills since last year. I really hope they can get this extension for a lot of people’s sake because if they don’t they can expect the crime rate to get even higher than it already is. I gotta keep it real, self-preservation is all that people understand, and many aren’t willing to lose everything they have because these people won’t give us the necessary help to maintain what we already have. People are gonna do what they have to do, and that includes ethical and unethical things. So, that’s something they need to strongly consider while they’re so quick to just cut people off, and no one is any closer to finding work. Especially, in a state where unemploment is like 10 and 11 percent.

    Me says:

I am not on unemployment, but suffering none-the-less and watching suffering I never thought possible. I was married to a man for 8 years who lost his job in 2008 and decided he was too “depressed and bitter” to seek employment. I mailed out dozens of resumes for him, filled out 100s of applications before I finally left him in 2009. He moved in with his granny… blew his unemployment on booze and partying, and left me high and dry struggling to find a job myself to support my two girls alone (they wont attach unemployment wages… nice right?) They need to hire more people at the unemployment office (look at that creating jobs!!) and look at each claim individually, weed out the people like my exhusband who don’t “need” their unemployment! My current b/f looks for work daily, has lost everything after working from age 14 up consistantly. He is practically homeless and can’t find ANY work, they didn’t even give him warning that his unemployment was up. How can he afford phone, email, or a vehicle to seek work now??? Doesn’t make a lick of sense we are cutting the limbs off of our “working class” one at a time and wondering why they are dying. I see a civil war in our future. The weak, poor, and unemployed are gonna rise up and it is going to be ugly.

    Gloria Stephens says:

I don’t get it. Everyone knows there are no jobs. Yet, there is no help for those of us begging for work. Why? How do our elected “officials” think we are paying for rent, utilities and food? Are they waiting for those of us who are tired of fighting the stress and depression to do ourselves in? The answer is, they don’t care.

I fantasize about the elected officials we voted into power losing everything and being forced into our situation. And telling them “we understand you need help, but you’ll have to wait months until we decide what we can do for you, if anything…sorry”.

  • 28
    IXLNXS says:

“I don’t get it. Everyone knows there are no jobs”

It’s called the Echo Chamber. They say it. Then the News outlets say it. Then all their little stoggies who are paid to blog say it. Then Joe Schmoe Public who glances over his news remarks to his wife how he just read that unemployment is going down. And the only ones complaining are lazy drug addicts. So from initial lie to the potential voters ear. It is what both political parties have counted on for a very long time. It is only through the advent of the internet that you are able to see and hear and read views directly counter to the propaganda that America’s government has been using for years.

Get mad. Get informed. Inform others. Repeat.

All of these problems can be solved at the end of a noose. For once our political representatives fear the electorate more than their greed wants that lobbyist money the sooner we will return to a representative government.

I would also like to add that I work right next door to a careerlink office. The parking lot was usually not very full. Since the extensions have lapsed I see a lot more traffic coming in and out. So much, that they have started patroling the parking lot to make sure all vehicles in lot are at careerlink. This is just showing that people will go out and look once they do not have a check coming in to them every 2 weeks.

  • 32
    Me says:

Jmf are you out of your mind??? Of course people are going to be desperate enough to go to things like “career link” when they are down to nothing. Unfortunatly if career link didn’t have jobs for the 15 cars a day, they aren’t going to have jobs for 50 cars a day!! If you have 300 unemployed people (making the numbers smaller so your mind can wrap around it) and 20 jobs, taking the benefits away from the 300 unemployed people really doesn’t do much now does it. Just food for thought and for moronic comments like that. THERE AREN’T ENOUGH JOBSSSS!! Why isn’t our governemnt focussing on creating jobs then cutting folks off. Typical Republican high horse thinking “look at those pathetic people scramble for jobs… see we just have to make them suffer til they all get a job a Mcdonalds” Well even Mcdonalds isn’t hiring.

  • 33
    jmf says:
