Unemployment Extension 2010 Update: Is There Hope for Tier 5, 99ers?

Tuesday’s Senate session saw the end of a Republican filibuster on the unemployment extension 2010 bill. Sworn-in as replacement for the late Senator Robert Byrd (D, WV), Senator Carte Goodwin (D, WV) provided the critical 60th vote needed to overcome the filibuster. The day’s events have set into motion the process that will guarantee that the unemployment extension bill will be signed into law this week.

What’s in the bill?

OpenCongress.org provided an explanation of what H.R. 4213 covers. Here is a summary:

The unemployment extension 2010 bill, otherwise known as H.R. 4213, began as a $141 billion omnibus package of stimulus spending, tax measures, unemployment insurance and more. What the Senate voted on Tuesday is a revision of the bill that whittles it down to $34 billion and includes only one substantial item — an extension of unemployment insurance for people who have been out of work for 6 months or longer.

Other highlights of the bill as provided by OpenCongress.org:

The filing deadline for unemployment insurance benefits is extended until November 30, 2010, this allows unemployed individuals who have exhausted their current tier of benefits, or who have exhausted their last tier since June 2nd, to file for a move into the next tier of benefits.

The bill also provides for benefits to be paid back retroactively for people who have seen their payments cut off since the filing deadline expired on June 2.

Additionally, it includes an extension of the closing deadline for the first-time homebuyers tax credit, but that provision is redundant with a bill that was signed into law on July 2nd (H.R. 5623).

Is there a provision for Tier 5?

No. According to OpenCongress.org, “The bill would not create additional weeks of unemployment benefits. 99 weeks (Tier IV) would still be the maximum amount of a time a person could receive benefits for in states with high unemployment rates, and 86 weeks (Tier III) would still be the max in states with low unemployment rates.

Does it include the $25 per week benefits under the Federal Additional Compensation Program?

No. This stimulus program would not be extended under the bill. OpenCongress writes “That means that all retroactive payments would be for $25 less than what they were before June 2nd, as will all payments in new tiers.

Are COBRA payments covered?

No. COBRA health insurance payments for the unemployed were dropped from the bill in a previous iteration. They will not be extended in this bill and there is no plan to extend them during this session of Congress, according to OpenCongress.org.

Now, what’s in store for 99ers – the jobless Americans who will not receive additional support under the unemployment extension 2010 bill? The 99ers are those who have already expended the full 99 weeks of emergency assistance from the federal government.

Earlier we reported on the surge on online petitions for the inclusion of a Tier 5 in the unemployment extension 2010 bill. Given Tuesday’s deliberations, that appears to be unlikely now.

According to the AOL News Surge Desk, the “Supporters of a Tier 5 believe that such emergency aid keeps cash flowing into the limping economy, as recipients turn around and spend it on goods and services. Conservatives argue that extending unemployment benefits beyond the 99-week limit would not only raise the national deficit, but also act as a disincentive to actively seeking employment.”

“Realistically, given the economy, I think it would [make sense],” to add a Tier 5 to federal unemployment benefits, economist Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research told AOL News. “The economy is in bad shape — it is not these people’s fault, they didn’t do it — but given attitudes in Congress it’s really difficult to see that happening.”

AOL News also discussed that “99ers” have few options. One is the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, which some families may qualify. But, the relief provided under the program is marginal compared to that under the unemployment extension bill.

AOL News also suggested, for those who qualify, to apply for disability benefits. But adds that the approval process can take time and might also inhibit the applicant from employment opportunities later on.

How about President Obama issuing an Executive Order to create a Tier 5?

AOL News said “Although the president has the power to issue an executive order in a crisis (i.e. Lincoln and the Civil War, or Bush and military tribunals after 9/11), and although the “99ers’ plight is certainly severe, it’s not considered comparable to previous emergencies in the eyes of Congress.”

Constitutional law expert Steve Schwinn of the John Marshall School of law in Chicago told AOL News, because the legislation that passed today to extend unemployment benefits contains no mention of aid for the “99ers,” President Obama’s hands are tied.

“Just running through the menu of possible authorities, it’s not clear to me that he has any [authority here],” Schwinn told AOL News. “And given that the Congress seems to be making a deliberate decision to exclude the 99ers, I think you have a real separation of powers problem if the president tries to step in and do by executive order what he is unable to achieve through legislation.”

I have quit watching or even waiting for a Tier 5 extension. I honestly don’t believe it is ever going to happen. For the people who say get off your lazy ass and get a job already, IMO it’s easier said than done. I was an account executive for Chrysler before that company went to hell in a handbasket. I thought I am smart and had some savings and I just knew that I would get another job soon right?

Well almost two years later I am still unemployed. I have even applied for jobs at a dollar store and guess what they don’t even want to hire me. They ask in interviews what have you been doing while you were unemployed…Its like duhhhh looking for a job. No I was not one of those people who sat on their arse just because I was collecting unemployment.

Ohh I did have a job briefly teaching basic computer applications to people trying to get their GED but they lost their funding so after working there for three months the program was closed and guess who was unemployed once again. I have cut back on any and everything I can cutback on. I now currently live in a one bedroom apartment with my son. I don’t have the money to even afford internet service at home, so I walk to Starbucks and use my aunts At&t account info to be able to surf the internet for jobs.

The one good thing with my car now being broken and no money to fix it, I am in shape now and have lost alot of weight due to all my walking. I am bikini ready and will start a new job stripping to pay my bills. Wish me luck ! If you are in the area be sure to tip Luscious Layla with your great paying jobs you have. Hell even stripping has its expenses, those clear choes are NOT cheap.

I am not worrying about Senate, Congress, Obama or any type of assistance from my wonderful government anymore. They have CLEARLY shown me its everyman for himself.

Off to practice my stetches and watch Carmen Electra stripper video again. Toodles!

Loved your comment!!! I hear you loud and clear … and so should all of the dumba$$es that say “you should go look for a job”. If you went to college you’re over qualified for burger joints. If you are not college educated your underqualified for all of the jobs that ARE NOT AVAILABLE!!!!! So wear those clear heels loud and proud and kick thefat bellies of all the gross men that would rather tip you than, than spend their money helping the homeless! Good luck Luscious! ;-)

I am curious, Is congress in self destruct mode? Why are you kicking the people that carry this nation? To qualify for welfare, I have to sell my home that is paid for and risk being homeless just for 300/mo? Here’s a thought for the Congress – Hire the 99ers as congressional consultants to get this congress in tune with the America that is the country we live in today. For the congress that seems the void of awareness of the condition of American 99ers, do the honorable thing and resign!!! As I am being told I am over qualified, you are under qualified and a disgrace to this great nation. You have attended great schools, yet you lack the mental capacity to see the the consequences of your actions. I had a job for a short period after being laid off from Gmac’s business offices in Cleveland, Ohio. Most of the jobs here in medical and law and many do not qualify for these jobs. Other jobs will not call back because of my salary history. They are only paying half of what I was making. The economy can not grow under these circumstances, which means you will fall with us. Take some advice from the boss – I am your boss because I pay your salary – Do your job, serve the people or myself with many others will fire you.

i’m a single guy so it’s prolly not an option for me. i just sold my car and after paying my debts i’ll still have 3k left. i’m packing my bags, flying to india and see if there’s anything for me there.

He talked about the current U.S.A. economy. He said several times that he, and his Republican Party, will move to reduce government spending.

That is a sound idea! However, Mr. Graham and his “tea party”, as he likes to call it, are not mentioning spending reductions in the form of curbing blatant special interest group over spending. Or eliminating their personal “expense accounts” which amount to tens of millions of dollars annually. And that is in addition to the over the top enormous salaries they vote for themselves. Thy even receive gasoline at no cost to themselves! They also vote for themselves to receive over the top special medical insurance; the premiums of which do not come from their lucrative salaries! They also vote for themselves to receive over the top, extremely lucrative PENSION PLANS! They made them guaranteed entitlements!

There are hundreds of thousands of public servants in the U.S.A. who owe their jobs, and lucrative salaries, to nepotism and favoritism among government employees! Let us reduce government spending by seriously reducing that!

To add insult to injury, these same public servants have created unions for themselves, that make it virtually impossible to fire them or even dismiss them from these lucrative jobs. Many of these positions are created, not out of necessity, but merely to accommodate the blatant nepotism and favoritism spending in the government!

But Mr. Graham did say unabashedly that he, and his “tea party”, wants to reduce Social Security Benefits entitlements (incidentally, he and his fellows are not part of the Social Security Plan; they have made certain of that)! Mr. Graham did also say unabashedly that he wants to reduce Medicare Benefits! You may have surmised, correctly, that Mr. Graham and his fellows are not part of the Medicare Plan either!

I move that U.S. Citizens, fire (can we do that?) Mr. Graham; and any governmental official who acts toward Social Security or Medicare Benefits that will not increase them!

Hey at least your fit enough to strip. Believe me if I could do it I would. I am that desperate right now. I really don’t think a tier 5 will ever get passed. I don’t see how they can say that extending unemployment for another tier would encourage people to stop looking for a job. I am one of the 99er’s and it makes me sick all that we are going though with no support at all. This is my first time collecting unemployment and believe me I would love to work. I am on the verge on losing my apartment. I dont eat so my child can. I don’t have the money to feed us both. I don’t have gas in my car and my tags are expried so if I do drive I would then lose my car. I am going tomorrow to apply for welfare. I have applied for 342 different jobs (just this month). I have applied from taco bell to Poctor and Gamble and everything in between. There was an article in my local paper that said companies where refusing to hire people who where unemployed or laid off, and posting this in their job descriptions. So I have now taking this off of my resume. Even taking this off of my resume will do little to help maybe it may get me an interview, but once they do a background check they will know that I was laid off. I cry my self to sleep everynight just wondering what I am going to do. If I become homeless they will take my child from me. I am doing everything I know to do. I know there are a lot of people feeling my pain right now. I live in Ohio and I know that in Ohio I pay into unemployment as well as all of my employer’s have. So if I have paid into unemployment for 20 years why is it that when I need it the most it is not there for me?

My fellow 99ers, republican or democrat it’s all the same thing. By having two parties our government has divided Americans. The Government just wants your hard earned tax dollars and their cushy little government jobs.
They just want to get re-elected.
As Americans we enjoy our freedom and life style and the Gov’s want to control that by controlling the economy and throw us bread crumbs to get our vote. Please see the below link that fully exposes their Strategy… Let’s not be fooled again and take our country back! Spread this around till we break them down!

What we suppose to do now that they are not including the 99ers into this bill? Rob a bank or take some old person pocket book. This is bad news there is no job out here and believe me I have been looking for 2 years and the companies can not say this but, they look at my age and right away they don’t want to hire me. I pray the President can do something because this is hurting a lot of people not just me. I do not want to lose my apartment. Please explain a little more about this TANF. Would we return to the unemployment office to file for this TANF?

    • 5.1
      Tim from CA says:

TANF stands for Transitional Assistance for Needy Families. It takes the form of food stamps, temporary (usually 3 months) housing assistance for people on the verge of being evicted provided that there are elderly or children involved, utility assistance if you are about to lose electric or gas, and cash aid provided that either children or elderly depend on it. Also pregnant women can get assistance as can foreign refugees. If you are a childless parent, you do not qualify for any of it except food stamps. Even singles can receive food stamps.

In order to apply you need to visit your County Social Services Office where they will provide you with applications and schedule an appointment with a Social Worker.

Its a joke..Tanf is assistance for needy families..and belive me it dont pay much..thats if you qualify..if you have 2 children it probably give you about 500.00 a month..thats not even rent..I was getting 796.00 every two weeks on my unemployment ..which I burly was surviving with rent and food, gas ..utilies, phone…the goverment is squeaking about assisting us with an extension for tier 5..or for that matter extend tier 4 for additional months since it would be the last tier…There is power in numbers as you see..1-4 received their benefits back…goverment was out numbered with the fact of reality..Its such a crying shame that even congress has no respect for the President request in notifying congress that the 99ers deserve help too. and now they want to make up more reasons why tier 5 should not survive.Sorry Obama they think you have no say..Please use your Presidental skills and show them whats up…..Its now fair how they say 1-4 should received benefits ,yes it is true its their turn to collect whats theirs but please understand people in reality there is not enough jobs out there !we still need help to to feed our families!!! A march in groups should be in many corners.with signs.to show our fellow americans ; this can be you too…We need to keep fighting ..what else do we got to lose..many of us already lost our homes..cars..401k..Congress has done enough damage to our lives!!! wishful thinking but I wish Obama should put the congress in the 99ers shoes for a few months with a payck of S.O.L to feed thier familes..maybe reality would hit the boneheads>

I think time will tell. There will be many more in the same situation after the holidays. The economy will feel the pinch come the new year when companies have depended on holiday sales to stay above water or to make profit. The smaller to medium companies will be affected and may cause them to close their businesses, which will cause a trickle effect. NOT GOOD!
The a–holes in congress eventually are going to screw themselves out of a paycheck when they bankrupt and run our country into the ground. We have to take back our country. Stand up and demand justice. I think “THE PEOPLE” in every major city in America should do a non violent protest. Stand up and demand that they take care of their own. WE THE PEOPLE
What really pisses me off is like comcast, Their customer service is located in another country. I would work a customer service job. Why do we send our work off to other countries when so many are needed here? Only buy American Made. That is how we solve our dilema.

The strange thing is when I turn 65 I start drawing my pension from this company. I told them to just give it to me now. lol

Unemployment benefits kicks in- now I’ve lost that too, becoming a 99′er! I can’t live just with SS (of course I’m lucky I am still getting SS- thanks) to pay credit card bills, etc. SSI is a branch of SS, who supports older parents of immigrants living in the US with monthly checks of $600 to $1000 each- but here’s the clincher, SSI is giving assistance to these older parents who have not contributed a cent to our system, and they won’t extend this assistance to those who have paid their dues- the 99′ers & other true Americans should get the help- not them! I bet most of our Senators/Congress don’t even know this happens in America!

In order to understand our government, we must consider the powers that be. Being a 99er, I believed that President Obama would hold true to his promise. Having seen jobs being outsourced by corporate America downsizing, greed and complasive politicians.

It makes me often wonder; Give Me Liberty OR Give Me Death!!!!! My fellow 99er’s our Government has given us DEATH! As we all know our government has formally delivered propaganda of the American dream. But the 99er’s are the forsaken. Nevertheless, Our Government commanded the 99er’s to march forward into despair because there are no jobs for us to bear.

In other words by excluding the 99er’s from this bill. We are forced to leave behind the loves ones we once cherished, because as a man you feel that you can no longer support their hearts.

“A man without a Job” is like he does not exist!! And without this extension the 99er’s will not exist!!! But let me say this! The way congress thinks today. Is let’s roll the dice!!! They are not important; Now that they are in office.

The Banks and Wall Street are doing business as usual. High interest rates and foreclosure’s for the month of June 2010 was 1.5 million!! I’m a true believer in GOD. But I often pray and wonder about my future in America today, the land of equality freedom and liberty.

Again, Mr. President, Congress, Senator’s. You give the 99er’s an executive order. As forgotten bewildered and broken soldiers. We command congress to an extension to liberty justice in the name of survival!!

Rescue the 99er’s from the dephts of despair, suicide, homeless and wondering aimlessly in a barren jobless land. For it is your duty as men not leaders to obey and command your OATH! To protect serve your fellow citizen’s without discrimination or malice.

I hereby command all 99er’s to converge on Washington D.C. in the name of survival and not to sit back as peasants to your own execution. Remember your voice and vote counts. Let Washington hear us as well…. Send your voices, thoughts, concerns and hearts. Yes We Will And Yes We CAN!!!!!

So what if the republican party wants to put you down for it!We need it to survive, and keep looking for work! Its a national emergency! People, and children are going hungry in this country! In the US that should not be happening if we are helping other countries and not helping our own people! You have the power to look strong to the American people! Use it! The unemployed, millions of us and every minority in this country is going to vote in november! The republicans do not have a chance! Help us Mr. president. What are people suppose to do after 99 weeks? Just go live out in the streets and rot with the bums that are too lazy to work?

What a lot of people don’t realize it that we lost our jobs due to companies downsizing, outsourcing jobs, or just plain cleaning house for younger blood employees who they won’t have to pay a hefty salary or benefits to. People who are in there 50′s like me are never going to get the jobs back that we were good at and loved. Now, we are suppose to be happy taking a part time, minimum wage, no benefits job and go back to what we did when we were teenagers. They need to create good paying replacement jobs with benefits to make things right. Until they can do that, they need to keep extending unemployment benefits. I know the politicians don’t care because it’s not them that this is affecting.

    Mr. President,
You have already made history. I commend you! I know your trying your best to deal with everything and the attitude of the republican congress. However, you need to help your people! You need to stop the talk,I have seen on tv that states “the president is looking weak”. Dont let the republican party do that to you. I am a white female who is and always will be a Democrat. I have never voted Republican in my 46 years of life! I will not start now! Many people are very aware of who is not giving to the unemployed! The republican party is voting no on everything to make you look bad!We know it! But do the right thing Mr. President and give us long term unemployed and extension too, so we dont end up in the streets, and rioting does not start. Or what I hear others stating, they will rob and steal and fight to get what they need. Dont let it happen please! We are human beings in crisis! Please dont fail us! Screw the republicans, and show the people what you really stand for!I know you care. The mid terms are coming and it would be a shoe in for all Democrats if the unemployed have food to eat and a roof over there heads. Please help us. GOD BLESS THE HUNGRY CHILDREN AND THE ELDERLY UNEMPLOYED AND THE LONG TERM UNEMPLOYED. GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

As a 99er I’m so upset that we are being ignored again. I already had a 6 -1 chance of getting a job. The last one that I applied for told me that they received over 160 applications!

With more and more people flooding the job market due to layoffs, the 99ers don’t have a chance at grabbing a new job. It’s not because we’re not looking and want to sit home all day, it’s because we’ve been out of work for two years and the newly unemployed are more current in their skills. Not to mention the fact that they have their pick of people with so many applying.

Our savings ran out and we’re now charging our bills to keep our house. We haven’t charged in over two years and had a nice, if small, cushion in the bank. Now? We’re in the negatives and trying to figure out how to keep the house.

I’m happy that the other people are going to receive benefits. I did so why shouldn’t they? However, there are at least one million of us 99ers who can’t find a job and it’s looking grimmer every day.

And I find it interesting that congress has no problem taking their time in resolving this issue but they all took their holidays. They all still received a paycheck. I’d like to control that for about six months. No paycheck for congress until I get back from vacation and even after I’m back I’ll take a week or two to get around to addressing the problem.

Oh, and then I’ll decide that the people who’ve been out of the office for seven weeks or more don’t deserve a paycheck at all. Because I want to help the economy by moving moving all those moochers off of the government payroll. They can lose their houses and their cars, health insurance, I don’t care. Too bad for them that they decided to be out of the office that extra week.

Isn’t their another country out their that I could give all the money I’m saving on the backs of other people? And thank god the government is funding the radio hall of fame instead of helping the 99ers. I hope it’s free to get in because even if I cared, I can’t afford to pay to get in.

Oh, by the way. It’s not easy getting a job at 49 either! They’re looking for the hipper, younger, newly unemployed. They don’t want to hire a person who reeks of desperation. Ew! Who wants someone like that around? Bummer.

Maybe I can get disability when the vein throbbing in my temple finally bursts from the stress of all this. Or it could be my ulcer. Heck, does TMJD count? Not to mention all of the teeth that I’ve broken from the grinding. Unfortunately, no money = no caps. I just have them filed done because that doesn’t cost any more than an office visit. I’m going to be left with stubs at this rate.

Almost forgot the migraines. You know why I just remembered now? Because yet another one is starting as I’ve been writing this. Can’t afford to have my head examined so I’d better quit writing before I can’t see anything.

I’ll just sum up by saying: I’m SOOOOO angry and disillusioned with this president. I can’t wait to vote him out. Wonder if they can make an exception and let Bush back in for a third term…sure, I didn’t like the guy and I never thought I’d be saying this but; he’s the lesser of two evils! I find that I’ve grown nostalgic for him and it worries me.

I’m neither for or against a 5th tier but I think that congress needs to have one thing pointed out to them. In the above article it stated that Congress didn’t want a 5th tier because it would leave the unemployed with less of an incentive to look for work. Well, if I am not mistaken, EDD already has a system for that. They check a box on your form and you have to provide proof you looked for work in order to continue receiving benefits. I have been unemployed for some time now and I always keep a list of all the jobs I have applied and interviewed for in case they check the box. Why not utilize the systems we already have. Just a thought

    James Stewart says:

I have been unemployed since Dec 09….and did collect the 26 week unemployment payments. But was not able to qualify for the 1st tier of the extensions because my checks ended a week after the dead line.Luckily I have savings that get me through……as an un employed I for one believe that 99 weeks is an extremely long time to be un employed.I understand that jobs are in short supply. But during the last six months there were plenty of positions I could have taken. The reason i did not….is not as you may think, because I was collecting unemployment…but because I lived within my means prior to being layed off……I saved money from each paycheck and have always saved throughout my working career.
I felt since I was layed off…my prior employer should pay me the 1st six months…..yes I felt owed by them.I was recruited by them from a very good job with great pay and lots of promises of future promotions….but when things got bad with the economy …those making the most got layed off first. So I have no guilt at all for my former employer having to pay me un employment.
I have however no intention of collecting a single dime from any emergency extensions…..I will go back to work in a couple of weeks and will as before save for any unforeseen future needs.
Anyone not working after 6 months is in my opinion …lacking any type of skills or is just lazy.It would be very easy for me to continue collecting the 475 a week (California) as I did before…it pays all my bills and only requires a few sacrifices for me.
I understand it’s different for everyone…but one only has themselves to blame…..if you do not take any time to better yourself…increase your skills to make yourself desireable as an employee ,save your money instead of living above your means….tough luck.
I work in Human Resources and rarely do I interview more than 1-2 candidates out of 20 who apply….and it is based mainly on job history…..why would I hire anyone with half a dozen jobs in the last 12 months? Also many who show up for an interview have no clue as to how to sell themselves or present themselves.Whatever happened to wearing some clean ,ironed clothes to a job interview?

Sorry I have seen hundreds of candidates and the government owes you nothing!!! For those 99 ners…get off your ass already.

      Tammy says:

James I hate to say it and I feel the same way 99 weeks is a long time to get a job. Even if it’s not the job you want but its a job. My daughter girlfriend just applied for a job at McDonalds and got the job the next day. As a matter of fact, she only asked about it and they encouraged her to proceed with the application. Your right its not all about living above your means and then waiting until the last minute to recognize. I’m unemployed and still trying to pay a $2000 mortgage. I encourage the unemployment to get creative and come up with ways to make money. An I know its harder for the people who are 50 and up and my prayers go out to them. The 99ers are asking the Government for more benefits through a tier 5 but the question they need to be asking is for the creation of jobs. Because what happens when tier 5 runs out – everyone is looking to the Government again for a tier 6. WE NEED JOBS! WE NEED JOBS! WE NEED JOBS not a tier 5!

      Jeremy says:

So what your saying is that I am lazy. You are also saying that anyone who has been on unemployment for 99 weeks is lazy? 12.3% is the unemployment rate in your state, I would like to question you as to how many jobs do you think there are for each person on unemployment in your state? Since the national average is 1 to 5. Also how many applications do you think most companies look at when they have an open position? You make me laugh when you you say we are all just lazy or go get some skills. Will you pay for me to goto college, pay for my daycare, pay my bills? As I see it you have failed at your job in human resources. You have just done the things that you should be trained not to do, harass and discriminate.

Also, it is posts like your’s that turn public opinion against us. You just gave justification to any troll who wants to post here. Jim says:

The first 4 tiers paying up to 99 weeks where created because the high UI % in many states is 9% and over 10% in many states since 08. So what has changed now? Nothing after last 2 years. UI rate still very high in CA. Thus the long term unemployed over 99 weeks are going to keep growing with so few jobs out there and millions of jobs lost since 08 not coming back this year. Last I saw it is 1 job opening for every 5 long term unemployed and worse in CA. Yet after 2 years the job market is still a double digit UI rate in many states like CA but Congress says sorry we are cutting you off. Congress still gives billions to other countries, spends billions on pork projects rather then help the long term unemployed in need. Also this idea we don’t want jobs because we get UI checks is a really evil rumor and ridiculous. Maybe 1% think like that sure. What about the honest 99% that cannot find any jobs no matter how hard they try or how willing to take lower pay etc? I am willing to work for much less and lower jobs I’ve not had in years but still no offers after 2 years? We know the job market is still very bad but we won’t help unemployed over 99 weeks? That somehow Congress are the ones who think things are better now than 2 years ago? Well maybe in fantasy world but not here in CA. Until something changes to make a better job market we cannot hang the victims of Wallstreet and Congressional greed that made most unemployed out to lose it all. We have money to send to other countries not for long term unemployed as long as UI % is so high? We continue to spend billions for so many bills and never see them saying stop we need to pay for this. Why are these not debated before spending the money we don’t have that congress tells us when it comes to tier 5? Until Congress stops wasting billions in that defense budget and all spending why are 99ers the poster child with Tier 5? We have many other areas to start with first not cutting off unemployed. Until then don’t tell the unemployed we cannot expect more help from a tier 5 and we don’t have the money. These are games and Congress knows it. Games played with worse off American victims in need. To the Congress stop the games. Use the darn stimulus money to help the Unemployed as long as UI % stays this high. That is right how long until UI rates come back to normal. That money is a stimulus better than any other. We use it to buy goods and services. That creates jobs in companies we buy from as they have better sales. Watch as consumer buying shrinks as more 99ers run out of unemployment checks with no new Tier 5 extensions. It’s going to grow to millions since jobs just not out there in the millions needed anytime soon. That will lead to more foreclosures, more drops in home values etc. It’s a snowball effect once people no longer have any money coming in.

They are rich and will go back to their companies, law firms etc at that time! They will never know the fear of being homeless and going to sleep hungry!
The problem is lack of attention to our plight because of the media! Every TV station talks about Mel Gibson & Lindsay Lohan morning, noon and night! We get a few minutes once a month if we are lucky! BTW the 99er’s number over 6.5 million but all they report on is 2.5 million that are effected by the bill! Report the truth and let everyone know that we are NOT included in the so called UI extesion! Now the Repubs are playing games again to hold up the bill for another day before it goes back to the House for a vote and then on to the President to sign! Anyone hear that on the news today?! NO, of course not because it doesn’t get the ratings to go up!

    Sick of it all says:

I am so sick of people saying get off your ass and find a job!! My husband has been on unemployment for almost two years. The only jobs he has been able to find were seasonal. He spends all day looking for jobs and when the day is over he comes home and starts looking online.

He has enrolled back in college in hopes of being able to find a job someday. The thing is this month is the month we get cut off of unemployment. We were hoping for a tier five but no such luck! I hope we will be able to keep him in school and still pay our bills.

To those who think that we want some kind of free ride come live in my shoes for a few weeks. When my husband lost his job we had to move from a lovely house into a trailer park because we could no longer afford the rent. Our trailer is so small we don’t even have a bedroom. My kids have those. my husband and I have been sleeping on separate couches for two years! Even with the unemployment benefits we were barely scrapping by. There are times when the bills are paid but we have no money for gas, household cleaning items and our personal hygiene products. We have to go to a local charity to get those things.

My husband is dying to find a job and he wants to support his family like he used to before all the jobs vanished. He is now working part time, 7.50hr at a public pool. This job ends next month and now we can’t even get any unemployment either. We would like to live in a house again with our own bedroom. We would like to be able to afford to by our kids anything. As of now they have went without anything nice for two years!

Also most the time my hubby was on unemployment he had to fax in a paper showing what jobs he applied for. There was never a time where we thought we would just live off that money. Before he was laid off he made between $1,000 to $2,000 a month. With unemployment he was getting around $700 a month. That is not enough to live off of. We cut our bills in half and still were not bringing in enough on unemployment. Even with that said it was better then the nothing we are going to receive now!!

To all you people with jobs and savings hating on us like we are the losers who spend a lifetime on assistance. I hope you lose your job! I hope you spend all your savings and then still can’t find a job. I hope unemployment cuts you off and you end up homeless like some many Americans are now!!!

Losing your job at no fault of your own and living on less than half of your wage is no fun at all let me tell you.

I want to be strong and I still love this Great Country that I have served and survived in. I want to think good thoughts but I’m not naïve to what’s going on and to what has gone on to which we face great problems among us.

    • well just ask you this big question? Where did the MONEY GO and who got the big bonuses we don’t even know about not to count the ones that we do.780 billion and then 870 billion give or take a few billion
.I think they named it wrong it’s not bailout it was handout and that’s not what the American people are asking for is handout may be a hand up. And that’s what exactly what they deserve is what was paid in, in ones name under their SSN, for some as much as 30 to 40 years or more, and never collected a dime, and you can ask yourself the same question? Again where did the money go?
I guess when someone steels something they don’t want you to know who they are and for sure don’t ever plan on given it back even if they get caught. Ask yourself where are these crooks are they so hard to find because there right under our noses and I’m talking the handout bailout. And we ask this question? Does The Government Owe Unemployed Workers? ”
I would say about 99. Something percent, all want to work and to find a job. But they just aren’t there and lost their job at no fault of their own. I bet that if any body would like to give up there job and change places with one of the unemployed workers. You won’t see anybody.
The people with jobs beware you to could become one with out one. It’s easy to think and say things about people, but maybe if you go yourself, you will have a better insight to reality.
Ask yourself were did the money go bailouts, banks rip-offs; maid off is a small pimple on a frogs ass on a big log in a big lake, the smoke screen has cleared, we can all see now the buyoffs, payoffs the top regulators, CEO’S, de regulators, speculators, Greedy at the top present created this great problem, find them tract them hunt them down make them give back the money and we wont be worried about another little extension But you have to start at the top. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE AMERICIAN PEOPLE WITHOUT JOBS, GIVE US JOBS AND WE WILL WORK LIKE NEVER BEFORE! We shouldn’t be worried about getting help and who is really in control, ask yourself were did money go, and where is it really going. We all know it’s not hard to figure out, it’s the wealthiest,
Greediest few, and to bad this saying still is true, the man or men with gold make the rules, or maybe that was OIL! “But the power is still with the people” we want our money back the FEW stole it from us, it didn’t just disappear it’s somewhere in the world, and they’re ha ha laughing all the way to banks!

Bernie Madoff is sitting in a cushy jail cell, probably smoking Cuban cigars and getting serviced by high priced call girls. His prison cell is better comfort than being unemployed with no relief in sight. His plight is endemic of our society and the way we treat thieves of the greatest magnitude. A regular petty thief probably deserves and gets a man’s beating, but steal hundreds of billions of dollars from the American people and you are too big to fail. Citigroup, AIG, and all the other dark players in this economic passionate power play don’t care
what they do nor how they do it because they have the government by the throat. We all saw how the republican pig fell all over himself to apologize to the BP CEO for the paltry twenty billion they coffed up to help the gulf coast residents; this is the main stream mentality of these monsters. They are wholly owned by the corporations they are supposed to regulate; many are on revolving doors from those very same industries, stopping in government just to make sure the engines of power only work for them. You could take these guys and their corporations and put them on an island somewhere and call it a separate government, guess what there are over two hundred of such islands including the Caymans, the isle of Mann, Cook Island, Luxemborg, Switzerland and the list goes on. These places allow the kind of chicanery that went on at ENRON, off Shore Corporation’s sheatherd by off shore trusts, inside banks that differentiate between the actual corporations and the label on the account. This means that even if they kill a bus load of nuns and orphans, they cannot be touched legally. We are the American people, they are the sharks and piranhas that have been brought here by the greediest among us to feed off our collective economic carcass; they will continue to do this until we either stop them by force or we are consumed. I do not advocate violent change but if they take everything away, there is nothing to lose but your life. I agree that organizing into a cohesive political force will help, but be aware that the powers that control everything will do everything to marginalize that movement. George Orwell predicted that life in these United States would change for the worse in his book 1984, he unfortunately was correct. The tea party has one thing and only one thing correct, we need change, we need to take back our government. We don’t need howling racist morons, but we do need change. I suggest that to really effect that change we vote, don’t leave it up to someone else…VOTE for those that truly represent us. There is a revolution every four years in this country, and we need to realize this and step up to the plate and hit a homerun. VOTE, VOTE VOTE, turn the bastards out.

The republicans don’t mind borrowing trillions of dollars for military purposes (Haliburton, weapons manufacturers, etc) in order to fight bogus wars. But when it comes to unemployment, they pretend to be fiscal conservatives. They talk about lower taxes, but for years, they borrowed money from China to fund the tax breaks. That’s not lower taxes, that’s simply borrowing money and spending it that you can’t afford to borrow.

We as a country have got to stop feeling entitled to the point where we borrow ourselves into bankruptcy. People with this mentality have destroyed the U.S. economy and the future health of our great country.

I see 99% of the posts here are over outrage that their unemployment benefits have been cut off. Now ask yourselfs, in all honesty, when we first declared war on Iraq, did you support that decision? Where was your proof that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction?

Many of you are acting like brainwashed pawns on a chess board. You vote for costly policies that benefit the rich, and then when it comes to your own selves, there is no money left over to put food on your tables and clothes on your children’s backs. If you voted Democrat or Republican, then you are nothing more than a brainwashed pawn being force fed whatever the political machine wants you to believe.

It is imperative that you stop this Democrat vs. Republican rigged two-party election brainwashing and start voting for those who are not mouth-pieces for corporate America. Otherwise, you are voting against your own well-being.

Watch time be their comings to the evil ones that created great problems among us they will pay in the end, time is running out for them no where to hide from the most powerful of all they will fall.

In nations where there is inequality and specious access to little or no resources, there is more violent crime, obesity, higher teen pregnancy rates, more instances of mental illness, an increase in the prison population and higher school drop out rates. (Pickett & Wilkinson) Where does America rank as far as these stats are concerned? No. 1! According to their research, “the United States has the greatest inequality of income in any developed country, except Singapore.” (Pickett & Wilkinson) This is not good news for us, and for all the ballyhooing that American politicians do about the democratic process and how wonderful American’s have it better than anyone else in the world, we’d better reexamine that myth. It isn’t much good when people in other industrialized nations out live us, and have better job related and health care benefits than we do. That says a lot about how great this nation is not.

who are we really fighting and look back at the past few wars that’s a little insight to reality inadvertently its still to sides and who funds which side with weapons and money it hasn’t really changed from the inside out Its not to hard to see control power and greed. The few and the many and what is a penny.

If all of the special interest groups, lobbyists, greedy people in this world didn’t get bills and laws passed for themselves to proliferate our government we wouldn’t have all these problems like we have today. Maybe we all don’t know that since the beginning of time, as we know it. Money, power and greed have brought down the most powerful and strongest of nations of this world. I think its time for we the people to awaken and take back this great country that are forefathers founded so many moons ago.

This is my thought on this situation. Firstly is an absolute atrocity that people are not being looked after in our own country. I’m SICK to my eyes of seeing “Feed the Children” in some forsaken land I’ve never seen or care to see to be honest. I’m tired of OUR money being spent on people that hate us in countries that are part of organizations that want to kill us. I’m TIRED of fighting a war that has NO END and for no freaking logical reason we are STILL THERE.

The politicHO’s whine and cry about money….money???? Why are they acting like it’s theirs and not OURS, the American people??? We NEED it here, not feeding kids in some foreign land, not fighting a war no one wants, not lining the pockets of some coporation that isn’t giving anything back by not hiring people.

It’s flat out unacceptable in any and every way that every single person in this country isn’t taken care of by the others that can. Socialist? SO WHAT?! If it keeps people off the streets, keeps them fed, keeps them healthy with medical care, keeps them educated and keeps them free to make their own choices for life then I say LET’S DO IT! The way of life we have going here now is not working for the big picture and it needs to change. It’s unimaginable that people can be so callous, cold hearted and just flat out mean spirited to other people that need help. They are always touting about charity…look what they are doing in the middle east, or the new aids hospitals being built in South Africa…paid for by YOU and me. Yet we don’t count and do not amount to more than a number. It’s a gross error on the part of the so called “leaders” to think that anyone other than a US citizen is more important in a crisis like this.

They are afraid of change, they are afraid that someone “will get over on them”, they are afraid that they will no longer be on the top of the pile but rather mixed in with everyone else. Just like the constitution is written….ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL. There are no conditions to that statement, it means what it says and how it says it. The people of this country get no respect from their government as a whole. That needs to change.

    Bridget says:

Well I have to say that I am glad to hear that we will finally be getting our unemployment cks. back I don’t know how they plan on getting our back pay to us but my bill collectors will thank you congress for approving this. I however am very remorseful for the 99ers who need help as much as we do. I can’t understand why we can’t help all who are unemployed at this time. I understand that we can’t stay on unemployment “forever” and none of us expect to but I think that until we are out of this mess we are in unemployment should be avaliable.

I will be one of those 99ers come Nov. and I know I will be feeling the way you all guys feel right now. I pray that something will give and you will get the help you need. Come on Obama step in and do something stand out be a man and use some of the power you have to help these people.

I pray for each of us daily and I know that this passage of benefit was a gift from GOD and noone else!!! Maybe we will be able to pay our elec. bill soon and I pray that they will hold on until I get may ck. before they turn them off!!

I am unfortunate to be one of the 99?er, it has be a gloomy outlook in Tampa considering this is my first time ever collecting unemployment compensarion.I have a 4yr degree and years of experience in my field. I am now forced to apply for public assistance having 2 kids and after working for over 20 years and having honorably served my county in the USMC. I am on verge of losing everything with my car on verge of repo and our house in forclosure. I can now see how some people do desperate things to survive. I would take a job 100x more than a unemployment check. But currently I have neither choice and thing only continue to get worst. We have been forgotten and the tragic fallout will not affect those who were elected to represent the voice of the people.

Do they think that we take the little nothing unemployment check people (were) getting and going on lavish trips, shopping sprees? WELL WERE DAMN SURE NOT!!!! we are using every last penny just to try to feed our children!, Sometimes even going without eating so your children can eat and not have to worry about sleeping on the street! Well they may have to worry now since the job market is terrible, IM NOT HOME WATCHING DAYS OF OUR LIVES, Im busting my ass looking for a JOB. Right, and the man can’t speak up specifically on their behalf either, I guess.

UI benefits are for those who lost their job through no fault of their own. So the people were working, likely productively, when I our greed induced financial tsunami hit and now floods the job market with applicants.

No fault of their own they’re out of work. No fault of their own the job market is horrific. No fault of their own their elected officials turn their back on them.

But the responsibility to feed their kids, pay their bills, etc., is all their own.

What kind of society re-invests in the people who caused such a crisis, while dis-investing in the workforce – its own people, that suffers b/c of a crisis they had no real hand in?

    Oh, ours does.

Things are bad but, at their core, they are even worse than they seem.

Amazing that us 99 er’s are loosing everything that we once worked hard for! I myself will have to start packing to move into a friends house and put my stuff in storage which I have no clue how I will be paying for it! I have been out of work since September 2008 working a part time job 2 days a week in which my boss had to start collecting unemployment because we are doing so badly the I cannot give him a paycheck.

I will now have to drive over an hour each way to get to this job that I get very little money from 2 days a week. And continue to look for work go on interviews in which 200 people apply for-you go through an interview and think that he has gone well just to be crushed when you do not get the job. Again as others have said with the age me being 42 they are hiring younger people who they can pay a lot less money and skills are just out of college/high school.

I do not think they are being fair with this Tier 5 with excluding the 99 er’s we need the help, as this is not our fault that we were laid off and not our fault we cannot get a job!!!!! The money is there help us!!

I will pray for all those in my position-it hurts to have to give up my home-my monthly payment is $1,100.00 a month which does not include util. and other misc bills car insurance, credit card, etc. This has me so stressed that I have not slept and have stomach issues!

The funny thing is that my boyfriend says it will be ok- ahhahahahahaha he works for the STATE of NJ!!! They have no clue what we go through!

I don’t understand how you can give emergency benefits to one group but not another. If there are few jobs then the fact is the fact no matter how long you have been receiving benefits. If the situation is emergency than it is across the line. Employers are not taking in consideration to hire those who have been without jobs the longest first. We have a emergency. Some of us have no where to turn. No one to pay the basic bills just to keep a roof over our heads. Either force employers to hire us first or add us to the emergency benefit package. Stop sending us to the streets homeless with nothing left of our lives. WAKE UP THATS WHAT IS HAPPENING PEOPLE! We lost our jobs. No fault of our own. We have been applying and interviewing like crazy! WE NEED HELP TOO! I keep reading opinions on how adding a tier 5 will effect the economy. An emergency is an emergency. The effect on the return of helping those in need has nothing to do with helping the people. If it has good effect because they all spend every dollar or has no effect. That is not relative to Emergency benefits. Should we stop providing health care to those who have been ill long term. Should we only call their situation an emergency if it is good for our economy. Your all playing games and this is peoples lives you are playing. I hope you all go to HELL. You’ve sure put our country and it’s people there!

at this point. I think 99% of my applications have been screened out by some computers becuz of the gap on my resume. at least that woman bothered to interview me.

that’s the only interview i’ve had since mid 09. and i have sent out at least 5,000 applications ever since i was laid off.

i’m a decent applicant too. I had about a dozen interviews thru fall 08. some of the positions were later cancelled, some of them I didn’t get cuz there’re just so many more qualified ppl out there who are also unemployed.

but starting from summer 09, despite the economy was supposed to have become better, i never get any response from hiring managers anymore. as i said, i think my applications are automatically screened out by computers due to the gap on my resume. i am so fu#ked.

    C. Albert Schneikart says:

OBAMA HANDS ARE NOT REALLY TIED, AND HE COULD ISSUE AN IMMEDIATE EXECUTIVE ORDER TO PROVIDE UNEMPLOYMENT TO THE 99′ERS…

…I take exception to the opinion put forth by Constitutional law expert Steve Schwinn of the John Marshall School of law in Chicago, reporting to AOL News that President Obama’s hands are tied, concerning President Obama issuing an Executive Order to create an additional Tier 5 of additional weeks of unemployment for those who have exhausted their maximum allowed
weeks of unemployment, which is 99 in the hardest hit states right now.

What Mr. Schwinn has conveniently left out is that every presidential executive order issued, always has their naysayers, such as Mr. Schwinn, and Mr. Obama’s hands are NOT really tied, and he COULD issue that executive order, at anytime, as he is the president right now, and that executive order would become law IMMEDIATELY — and unemployed folks out there would get those additional weeks of unemployment, just as fast as the state unemployment offices can implement them.

Also, it was also appalling to see President Obama do his photo opp on Monday with those 3 unemployed workers, all the while bashing the minority political party in Washington D.C. for holding up unemployment benefits. In truth, the majority political party had the votes all the time to get this through and did not have to make the unemployed people wait, and we as viewers, would not have had to suffer though yet another politically-motivated photo opp by Obama. All Obama and his
congressional cohorts had to do, was to ram the unemployment bill through like they did previously with the un-wanted and un-constitutional health care bill (I’d be very interested to hear a so-called Constitutional law experts’s opinon on that health care bill, also). Beyond that, as Obama stood with those 3 unemployed people, all the while Obama could have
spared us all this politically-motivated photo opp and did two presidential executive orders, the first to extend the expiration date for current unemployment from June 2, to the end of November, or even the end of the year. And then, the second presidential executive order, to extend actual, additional weeks of unemployment beyond the maximum of 99.

Further, I do value Mr. Schwinn’s opinion, but he should have researched his opinion a little more and looked up from the desk, from the politically-worded legislation to see what the real buzz is concerning the emergency need for unemployment benefits beyond the maximum of 99 week. It would be interesting for AOL News or other News agencies to hear from other so-called Constitutional law experts, those that were more truly in tune and more sympathetic to the plight of the 99ers.

Lastly, people who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own, should not be punished, and should definitely get further unemployment funds, so that they can keep their houses, pay bills and put food on the table. Maybe Congress and the Senate will one day hopefully soon, get off their doffs and stop helping out the bankers and catering to the financial institutions, especially those giving them campaign money, including that AIG outfit. Then, Congress and the Senate can
finally do something to create new jobs so that the unemployed can go back to work, and to also bring back those lost jobs, especially those going to foreign workers now doing u.s. jobs.

He has routinely taken advantage of me, and I dont know what to.I fear if I tell his wife he will have someone hurt me. It would take money to hire a good lawyer, and I cannot prove to the police that I am being raped to keep my job. Any suggestions. I’m sorry…but I really don’t even understand your comment and what it has to do with race. I am glad you were taught to be resourceful but were you taught some manners because you are just rude. What do you mean by there is no more room down here? Down where…hell? I am going to pray that you get some empathy for these people, I work with unemployed people that are truly looking for work and can not find it, we are in a very difficult time. I hope and pray that you never go through half of what some of these people are having to go through. Lighten UP!!

So while you push us through the system and wait for your check you just stay focus on not making mistakes on paperwork so that people like me get what they need. And oh by the way, being down here is not hell. I’ve been a witness to tiny glimpses of hell. Down here ain’t it.

    Tired and Disgusted says:

I am a 99er and a mother of 4 kids. I was laid off in November 2008 and have been looking for work ever since. My house went into forecloser last year and we were forced to move to another state. This left me to start my job search all over again. Now congress has passed this unemployment extension. However, they have excluded the 99ers. Then I read that they suggest we go apply for TANF (welfare). That is so backwards to me. TANF is tax dollars!!!!!! Why not just give us the extension along with everyone else. I really do not know what we are going to do. My money is exhausted and we are sure to be evicted if I miss August 1st rent. 4 kids, homeless and no money is a terrible thing. Come on Government….you can’t be serious!!!!!

    Tim from CA says:

I’ve been unemployed for close to 3 years. It started with having to go on temporary disability and when my doctors said I could go back, there was no room in the inn. I had that job for 5 years, never missed a day, and excelled at their production standards. The only thing I didn’t do was kiss up which my boss wanted all of her employees to do. Since then I have filed hundreds of applications and resumes, I check at least once per week on the Caljobs website, and I get daily e-mail alerts from Monster and Thingamajob (similar to Monster). I also check out Craigslist at least once per week. These have netted me a couple of dozen interviews and no job offers.

Most of the interviews have only lasted 5-10 minutes. Once they see me and see that I am both in my 50′s and overweight, I get the cold shoulder. I don’t even receive the promised courtesy call back telling me that I wasn’t getting hired. I even went on an interview through a temp agency one time, but while on my way to it was given a call telling me that the job was no longer available. It just so happens that 5 minutes earlier, the recruter met me so I really don’t know what else to think.

As for the Tier 5 extension, I don’t forsee it happening until afterthere are no people left in Tiers 1-4. At that time 20% of the country will be unemployedand the government will be paying for food lines like they had back in the 1930s. It will not be too far in the future.

    Harry says:

Unemployment benefits are not FREE MONEY. We contributed to it, and our taxes paid for the extentions. The multi billions given to the banks was “necessary” to save our economy. The one million plus 99ers are looked upon as pathetic lambs being led to the slaughter house. They are too weak to find jobs after 99 weeks of charitable goverenment “handouts” The congressmen who turned their backs on the 99ers are pigs, and should be looked upon as criminals abusing their sworn commitment to the people they represent. The trail of ruined lives is the fault of a dispassionate and incompetant congress, and a charming but lying President. Boy did we miss the mark when we trusted his phony promises. We know what to do, but ask yourself….are you ready to rumble???

YOU did NOT pay one cent to unemployment benefits, unless you are an employer..you are right it is NOT free money our employers paid that money in by law..it should be already in a fund waiting on us when needed, however the GOV arses felt they needed it more then we did..they voted themselves pay raises and helped themselves to that money!

Please Everyone don’t lose the faith and keep fighting for Tier 5. We can’t let them get away with sticking their middle finger up at us again. Keep calling and emaiing the Senators and the President. Keep complaining. If you are lucky enough to still be receiving unemployment don’t let yourself get complacent we must stick together and insist that Congress does not go on vacation without passing a Tier 5 and the Cobra benefits. It’s unconscienable what they are doing. They are dooming all of us to a very insecure future and when the economy does finally turn around it’s not going to do much good if we are all living on the streets while they live in their ivory tower. Screw them. We need to be assertive and not let them get away with this BS. Who cares about November even if they get voted out these S.O.B.’s still get their salary for the rest of their lives it will be like giving their lazy butts a vacation. We must keep fighting. Don’t accept anything less from them. The Force is with Us.

I thought I was setting myself up to succeed. I took advantage of the training, set out to obtain a degree, pushed myself all the way thru to get awesome grades to stand out from everyone else and through it all my daughter and I went without to try to make it. Well after 2 years of wasted time I can’t even get an employer to let me “work for free”?! to get my time for an externship. If I can’t even volunteer how am I supposed to find a job that pays?

I still have 10 more weeks of schooling to go to finish my degree but with no income and savings tapped out, I will have to give up on my degree because I can’t afford to travel 49 miles to school (one way).

I get so pissed when I read people posting “if the unemployed would get off their a#@$s and get a job…” if they only knew, I wish they would look for work for just 2 weeks and pretend that their lives depended on what they found, then and only then they might understand what all unemployed Americas are up against and we aren’t chosing to sit back for the free ride!?

AND if we asked them (government officals) to live on 60% of their income just to get America thru this situation – not one of them would be able to figure out how to survive. I feel that when their term is up, so is their compensation. What job in the real world will pay for your benefits, retirement, ect AFTER you are no longer working for them?! Also, if the company is in trouble/not making a profit they cut your wage or at least freeze raises – why should it be any different for the people in our government?! How are we supposed to support their incomes/lifestyle when almost everyone in America is earning $8/hr? And don’t get me started on the debt that we are passing on to our children, yes some of it is generated from paying unemployment but we need to remember everything else that contributed to the debt prior to this mess that the Free Trade Agreement made.

To everyone that is unemployed, good luck because your going to need it! And they (the government) wonder why the general public doesn’t trust them?! REALLY?!?!?!?!?

    Carol Adams says:

I’ve read that a significant percentage of these 99 er’s are over 55. This means they are getting a double whammy with unemployment and age discrimination. It also means that they have probably been working for over 25 years, paying their unemployment insurance for all those years. And now they are being told that they cannot collect benefits because they have been unemployed too long. Of course they have been unemployed too long. That’s another reason that they aren’t being hired. Its tough to find a job in good times when you have been out of work for 2 years.

I live in Reno , Nevada and we have the highest unemployment rate in the country, 14.7%. There are NO JOBS.
So don’t call us lazy. We want to work but with out enough of jobs to go around, and because of our age us 99ers are finding it tough. I’ve lost everything through BANKRUPTCY in April 2010, and at 61 yrs. old it’s hard to start over. Until jobs
are plentiful we need TIERS 5-6 7-8 what ever it takes to get us going again. It’s hard enough just worring about our day to day living.
Yesterday in our NEWS BROADCAST a 45 year old man shot his 82 year old Mother, set their house on fire and then killed himself. They lost their home in BANKRUPTCY.
Is this what it is comming too. It’s terrible to think that people will take their own lifes because they see no way out.
We need help and now befor any one else does such terrible things.

NO PERSON SHALL TELL ME TO GO WORK AT MCDONALDS!!!
If you have the balls to say that to anyone who is unemployed, Give me your job and you go work at mcdonalds

The unemployment rate for the united states is slightly under 10%, This statistic is created from the back of the ones who have loss their jobs at no fault of their own,
This Statistic doesn’t Count All the new individuals who have never, had a job ever, Given with this statistic the unemployment rate is roughly 23% in any state…

That Means for you DUMBA$$3$ out there who dont understand, their is 20 application for every job opening, I recently went to fill out an application
that had 6 job openings with in this buisness, This job was posted at 9:42 am at 12:30 when I arrived at the company there had been 497 application submitted for review and the crowd kept coming as i was leaving…

In conclusion congress is smart that they didnt give us this 5 tier of un employment, Cause my first priorty is to march on the capitol, although now i have no money its just to damn far away…

Although I have had an idea WE should just go stand in the middle of the roads all over america and disrubt the flow of the economy, And show congress that we control this mother F’R not them its for the people not against them, It’s Stand side by side not on my F’ing back,
Its Save the poor and F the rich where in the hell is Robin hood…

It is time america make your stand, For they have pushed and pushed and pushed us into the corner and destroyed our lives through their faulty laws, and loop holes, and the bail outs… Why now do they worry about deficit.
they want seperation a greater seperation and much divided nation than ever before…

Welcome To America where you still get F’D after being F’D over and o ya theres another F’ing around the corner

    Jennifer Nodine says:

I hate the jerks that say, “how many years are enough?” like they HATE the unemployed. My response is, if you think they have it so good then why don’t you trade in your job for the pink slip. Unbelievable. The unemployed by definition are people who once had a job. People who were not happy to lose it. These people did not say, “yay, I get to collect half my usual paycheck while I subject myself to humiliation after humiliation being turned down for jobs that once were beneath me”. Many of these people have worked their entire adult lives and have NEVER been unemployed or collected a “handout” before in their lives.

And that brings me to my other rant…this term “handout” is highly inaccurate. It is a payout from an insurance policy, of which the premium has been paid by every employer you ever worked for since you started your first job.

I have about two months of prepaid utilities left and then? I think I have 380 dollars to my name.

I am a 60 year old, college educated 99er. The serious jobs won’t hire me because I am too old to be a long term hire and they think I will retire soon. I am too young to collect social security and the lower level jobs say I am overqualified. So I have been eating into my savings at an alarming rate and will most likely have to take early retirement as soon as I qualify for social security, which means the lowest return for all the years I did work, starting as a teenager. So, explain to me, as those politicians say, that I will become lazy and take advantage of the system if there is a tier 5. I worked my whole life, never collected one dime of public assistance until this current downturn. To now see everything that I worked for slowly melt away with no help from a government that I supported my whole life. This country doesn’t have to worry so much about an enemy coming from a foreign country, the enemy is US!

    James says:

I have a idea if there are no jobs out there how about lets make some jobs, any job lets start by fixing ever pothole in every city and town pay us and we will work. I will work I love to work and I bet 99 percent of all people without jobs want to work. Losing your job at no fault of your own and living on less than half of your wage is no fun at all let me tell you.

I want to be strong and I still love this Great Country that I have served and survived in. I want to think good thoughts but I’m not naïve to what’s going on and to what has gone on to which we face great problems among us.

What is this 999 crap this is to say it real nicely Ill leave a space you can fill in your one definition what you think.

Watch out for the weasels that have turned into moles.
Treasonous Criminal Taxpayer Funded Bailouts: Just for Starters:
    AIG $128,500,000,000 (B)
    Freddie Mac $45,600,000,000 (B)
    Citigroup $45,000.000,000 (B)
    Bank of America $45,000.000,000 (B)
    JPMorgan Chase $25,000.000,000 (B)
    Wells Fargo $25,000.000,000 (B)
    Fannie Mae $16,200,000,000 (B)
    General Motors $13,400,000,000 (B)
    Goldman Sachs $10,000,000,000 (B)
    Morgan Stanley $10,000,000,000 (B)

Some people do have the balls and guts to get the job done you will see it soon enough, and the news media loves dirty Landry then it will be finally exposed and unstoppable. You wont be able to keep your eyes closed anymore just like a slap in the face. End the wars we will get them later they can’t hide untie there hands get job done and get out haste makes waste that includes human lives and think of the money you’ll save + lives too. But maybe we all don’t no who makes all the money off war. No tax breaks or loop holes for big banks and corporations keep the money here that’s at least 870 Billion a year. I know some of you peoples… can come up with some more billions wasted or stolen. The unemployed will give there money back and you can see it.

There are thousands of high tech jobs in US that are not available to US citizens. Big companies are allowed by our government to bring foreign technical people to the USA from overseas, pay them less and eliminate jobs for American.. This is possible via the h1b1 visa program. These foreigners come over on this work visa and replace an American worker. After they are here they bring in their friends and family and get them hired where they are working.

    Franklin D. Roosevelt

It isn’t much good when people in other industrialized nations out live us, and have better job related and healthcare benefits than we do. That says a lot about how great this nation is not.

Friends, we need to DO SOMETHING besides share our feelings. Call and/or write your Senators daily, primarily the ones who are voting against unemployment. I am doing this. If we do it in numbers, we have to be heard. FYI, I am also contacting 60 Minutes because it is true that the media is also hurting us by not reporting the truth. People and employers have a false impression of the long-term unemployed.
And, yes, we all can vote. Register.

Well our government just sucks plain and simple. Obama having 3 unemployed people standing behind him in his news thing the other day was a joke. I for one will never pay taxes when I work, the government wants to screw me I will screw right back and claim 10 dependants on my tax form just so nothing is taken out of my paychecks. When the irs wants their money I will send the letter to white house or tell them to get it from afghanistan. I will be voting my senate out this year and everyone else who I don’t think did a damn thing for their people.

Reason for the Present Condition of the U.S.A. Economy

The top U.S. politicians in Washington, D.C. decided, under the direction of the billion dollar defense contractors and their professional lobbyists, to engage in yet another (Viet Nam style) illegal war campaign. This time in the Middle East Region.

There is no conscription policy currently being used (by the top U.S. politicians in Washington, D.C.).

To achieve the goals of the billion dollar defense industry therefore, it is necessary to orchestrate a 15% layoff policy of the Non-Affluent Working Class Citizens in the U.S.A.

In that manner the military quota for boots is met. If there are no good jobs available to the Non-Affluent Working Class Citizens , they will “volunteer” to join the army.

The Non-Affluent Working Class Citizens are the people who are used, by the top U.S. politicians in Washington, D.C. to actually fight such illegal wars. The wealthiest citizens don’t get their own boots, or those of their sons and daughters, muddy. It could prove to be hazardous to their health. Simple history research will easily bear out the fact that money is often used by the affluent to keep ones boots clean. Simple research early as the Viet Nam Era U.S. history, will prove that to be accurate. Ever heard the terminology “School Deferment”? Look it up.

The senior (over 55 years of age) Non-Affluent Working Class Citizens are residual subjects. By them being laid off from their employment, the top U.S. politicians in Washington, D.C. are assuring that less money will be spent on the entitlement programs in the near future, and beyond. Simple research will easily prove that to be accurate. I shall expose the details for that in my next article.

Thank god the Democrats didn’t give up. It doesn’t affect me because i am a 99er but it helps my wife and our family. In 20 years i have never been unemployed and now after hundreds of applications for 6 dollar jobs and up i would appreciate unemployment help. I surely don’t want help but i need it. I have four teenagers that wonder when this will get better. I don’t know what to say anymore. I keep saying it will get better. 2 years and 1 month later i am starting to feel like a liar. Why not tier 5. The financial people are right the moment i get a check it would be spent on food or school clothes and supplies, not one dollar would go in the bank. I don’t do drugs or drink rarely. Don’t give up on us Democrats. We know you still care.

Why does everyone think that the American people got themselves into this mess? Yet, we’re suppose
to dig our way out of it and keep going on our own…

No one wanted to be in this situation of hopeless despair and unemployment with no end in sight
—no matter what I do, I can’t get out of it…

I lost a job $60,000-80,000 per year. Now I live
in the back seat of my old car in 100 degree heat and humidity–and with the windows rolled down at night with no protection from the streets. I struggled on unemployment (which is not your previous salary)(and now gone). I don’t qualify for Welfare. And, community resources here are exhausted. No shelter space available. No job responses after 2 years of trying—everywhere with
    everything including McDonalds.

    Any suggestions?

Times change. What was appropriate for past unemployment is not good for today’s situations. The old ways of granting extensions and tiers are outdated and need to be alter for present conditions. Why can’t congress see that many are really hurting and on verger if not already in financial ruin. People are not hiring out there and we can’t find jobs. What are we suppose to do? What does one do if they do not qualify for any welfare or food stamps. We can’t get loans or any help from anyone. We have no money , no savings and no 401k’s and nobody for calling us back for interviews for any kind of job. We are all qualified workers who are being forced by our government to be in financial ruins. There will be more and more mortgage foreclosures and credit cards unpaid and school loans and the list goes on and on. We have no way to recover from our situations now and just sit and wait till what little we have left is gone. How sad our country and moral has become. Until the media keeps talking about this we will all just be forgotten about.

Fantastic for the passing of the Unemployment Extended Benefits bill. However, this does not extend benefits for all of the unemployed. What is the Government going to do for their constituents, to extend the unemployment benefits for All of the millions unemployed? When is the Tier 5 extension going to be passed? As well as, how are all the unemployed going to feed their families, house their families? If the Government can find money to bail out the banks and Wall Street and send to foreign countries to help them. Then there is no excuse for any Government official not to ensure all of the unemployed have their benefits income in order to survive until the job market picks up. Not doing so is just as President Obama said, “It’s Criminal Politics!” Pass the Tier 5 and 6 or however many Tiers it takes of extensions until all American citizens get back to work. It’s time everyone starts flooding the White House, and their Senators and Congressmen with emails, mail, and phone calls daily and Demand Action Now!

I’ve been homeless for months even before the unemployment ran out. Couldn’t make ends meet.

My area in Pennsylvania has exceeded it’s limits on
    funding – everywhere.
Two shelters have swelled so bad that they can only accept
families with children and can’t even house them anymore.
One shelter has only a 1 month stay and always full–then it’s hit the streets again. Even people there suffered from mental illness and disability, not just unemployment and homelessness. I called for action in our community for a refugee camp or tent-city
to be built somewhere here, but got ignored. Things are only going to get worse!! There is no place to go….

Don’t believe anyone can just go on monetary Welfare.
    These are the criteria:
    Must have dependents or,
    Must be disabled or,
Must be victimized in Domestic Violence or,
    Must be pregnant
If you do not fit one of these criteria, you may
not receive monetary Welfare. You may, however,
    qualify for food stamps.
And, what difference does it make anyway if
unemployment gets drained or Welfare gets drained?
This makes no sense to me even if the average person
    could receive Welfare..

I’ve tried for 2 1/2 years to get employed. Blue-collar
or white-collar. They don’t respond 98-99% of the time.
Those that do, complain they have 300-500 applicants, don’t
want someone who has been out of work for a long time,
don’t have the experience-even for a mediocre job like
fast-food and retailing. They have hundreds of “internal” candidates to choose from, but legally have to post the job. Jobs have been cancelled even after interviewing. I know at age 59, I already have a strike against me.

Homeless women I met out on the street have been thrown out by their own families or spouses. So, you can’t count
on family and even less on friends to take care of you.

All our community resources have complained that they are
bankrupt and exceeded their monetary resource limits….

Thanks to the Bush Administration and our government for getting us into this mess. We went to war and took care of the world when the job slow-down started all the way back with 911–and they continued to say the economy was fine. Bull!! Jobs even then were getting harder and harder to find and land, growing worse all these years. Plus they ignored Economists. People were already
cashing in 401Ks, not because they were scared of banks
collapsing, but because they already needed the money!

Your next step, hit the streets or live in your car and eat in soup kitchens..Like me (with a college degree)

Out-of-work job applicants told unemployed need not apply

The last thing someone who is unemployed needs to be told is that they shouldn’t even apply for the limited number of job openings that are available. But some companies and recruiters are doing just that.
Employment experts say they believe companies are increasingly interested only in applicants who already have a job.
“I think it is more prevalent than it used to be,” said Rich Thompson, vice president of learning and performance for Adecco Group North America, the world’s largest staffing firm. “I don’t have hard numbers, but three out of the last four conversations I’ve had about openings, this requirement was brought up.”
Some job postings include restrictions such as “unemployed candidates will not be considered” or “must be currently employed.” Those explicit limitations have occasionally been removed from listings when an employer or recruiter is questioned by the media though.
That’s what happened with numerous listings for grocery store managers throughout the Southeast posted by a South Carolina recruiter, Latro Consulting.

I worry about this country weakening. It opens the door for harm to be done to America. As a parent who has lived through a lot of hard times, it hurts to watch my child go through this.
They lose their smiles, their hope and see a harshness of a reality I have never seen before in my lifetime.
Our kids are smart and ready to contribute to this country, but it looks as if it isn’t wanted. Something has to be done to stop these Republicans from a stupid and ignorant thinking that is hurting everyone. They have done enough to us and our children. It has to stop. Also, Nancy Pelosi is a big loser in my book. She should be out of office. She is dead wood. Tier 5 is needed. Stop paying her and people like her a fat salary to do nothing but mock people who are in need. People who write in supporting the Republicans obviously their remarks are fake about being 99ers. Unbelievable!

I have been laid off since March and am deemed unhireable because of my past achievements – people are afraid they would lose their job if they hired me, because I have high aspirations and accomplish my goals! Had it not been for the very, very small amount of unemployment checks I would not be able to pay my rent!!!

I did not ask to get laid off and am unable to find work – yet I read articles here where people think that a person on unemployment benefits is a person on Welfare who has no desire or intention to work. This is NOT the case. I am an out of work manager with limited – and I DO mean limited – opportunities to even get a job. Most places aren’t even hiring at minimum wage here. It is vicious out there!

For now, all I have is the small amount I receive from UE, which is not all that regular. If not for that small amount I could not survive.

To those of you who are so pious, heartless and dilusional in your opinions – walk a mile in my shoes. Someday without rhyme or reason, you or someone you know will be in my position and quite possibly without a roof over their head or a friend to help. Everyone for themselves? We will never survive as a nation – a family – a person, should we take on this attitude as our MOTTO!

    True Reality has a HEART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    JANUARY 2011 Current Events:

The U.S. economy for the working class poor continues to nose dive. That means precious little work available at a household supporting salary level. Why, you may ask? Simple; greed. Greed on the part of the top 20% in the U.S. who literally control the U.S. economy. I speak of those who hardly give a second thought to purchasing a single piece rare pottery for $10 million. But don’t want to utilize such monies on paying their fair share of income tax!

The current U.S.A. situation, year 2011 : The elite continue to get much wealthier, and the working class poor continue to get poorer.
The Root Problem: Corporate Corruption and below board politics.
Fact: Corporate Dollars buy a lot of legislation.
The Remedy: There is a famous phrase in the U.S.A., a government of the People by the People, for the People. Therefore, The People need to take to the streets in peaceful well organized protest. Without relenting, and demand their rights to an above board and direct ordinary language policy of Governmental Officials. The time is at hand for Constitutional Amendment.
The Rights of The People (U.S. Citizens) should and must include these six articles:
    1) No Business nor Corporation domestic or foreign shall spend money for the purpose of electing any U.S. Governmental Official. Furthermore unlawful to accept such money.
    2) Professional Lobbyists shall be prohibited.
    3) All sources of election campaign money, and total amount, shall be published and made readily available to the public.
    4) Term of Office time limits shall be set for all Governmental Officials. None of which shall exceed ten years.
    5) On the topic of the Judicial Branch. Concerning Common Law, criminal, and civil, and the practice thereof, all Latin phrases and terminology, as well as any language other than English, shall be translated to, and replaced with proper American English effective immediately. The use of Latin phrases and terminology in the U.S. Judicial System shall be prohibited. In addition to that, courts of law shall refrain from using languages other than American English. Non-English languages may only be used in the U.S. Judicial System when necessary to accommodate Non-English Speaking Plaintiffs and Defendants.
    6) No Governmental Official, nor civil servant, shall appoint nor hire, their kin, by marriage or blood, to any public office, position, or civil service employment.
The enactment of these six articles will assure control of the democratic process by The American People (Private U.S. Citizens).

    Signed, we the people.
