Senator Charles Schumer (D, NY) told WENY-TV that Congress is working on a separate act to help the 99ers, hinting a possible legislation on a Tier 5 unemployment extension bill.
President Barack Obama just recently signed the unemployment extension 2010 bill into law. This development has brought relief to millions of unemployed Americans who anxiously waited for several weeks for its passage. That bill, however, does not contain provisions for Tier 5. As we reported earlier, “The bill would not create additional weeks of unemployment benefits. 99 weeks (Tier IV) would still be the maximum amount of a time a person could receive benefits for in states with high unemployment rates, and 86 weeks (Tier III) would still be the max in states with low unemployment rates.”
According to Senator Schumer, more legislation is forthcoming to extend benefits to 99ers.
Here is what the Senator told WENY-TV:
“There are a number of people who have maxed out, they’ve been looking and looking for work but haven’t found it, and there is a separate act that would extend those benefits to them,. Extending this was really important. There are some people who go beyond the 99 weeks and we’re gonna try to do that next.”
Senator Schumer, however, did not provide any timeline for the Tier 5 unemployment extension bill.
The Senator from New York was one of the more vocal supporters of the unemployment extension 2010 bill. In one session when the bill was still deliberated on by the Senate, Senator Schumer told his fellow Senators “…if we don’t move forward with the short-term extension of unemployment insurance” it will be “tragic” and “virtually inhumane” to jobless workers.
Meanwhile, the growing ranks of 99ers (estimated to be 1 million) are hoping that Senator Charles Schumer and his colleagues are fast tracking work on an unemployment extension Tier 5 bill.

I’m so glad the extension was approved and that there seems to be some hope for the 99′ers. But I’m having trouble with the fact that my regular UC is running out ONE week too late for me to qualify for this emergency unemployment compensation extension. The deadline for regular UC exhaustion in Pennsylvania is Nov. 20, and mine runs out Nov. 27, so after that I’m stuck (if I don’t have a job, of course). So, there will be many, many people collecting far more than 26 weeks, while I will be cut off at 26 weeks, just because I lost my job too late to benefit (and even though the job market hasn’t improved at all). Although I am truly happy for those who are eligible and definitely don’t want them cut off, it doesn’t seem fair that people in my situation will be cut off. Seems wrong, and it’s very scary.

Let’s extend the benefits of those who are already getting EUC, but lets also put the people nearing the end of the benefit on the back burner, let them get evicted, forclosed, repo’ed. Not once he ever mentioned how difficult it is for elderly unemployed Americans – those of us 50-65 to find jobs in this economy. He has done absolutely nothing to help this vulnerable grouo of people among 99ers. I would like to hear our President once – just once – to go on TV and explain to us 50+ years old how on earth without special legislation we are supposed to survive? Going on welfare Mr. President? I see a lot of blame being passed around. They all played political games with our lives. That my friends is the bottom line they both wanted something and no one wanted to give and make it work. The bottom line is the Government (and that does include our president) played a political game with millions. Many of the unemployed were walking a fine line as it was and now the extentions are being delayed at a state level. Face it for many poeple it is to late they have lost homes. My husband has a job, we can’t however without my unemployment eat more than once a day, we haven’t had our meds in well over a month. I have to look at the better side of things though. I have a home! I have worked for over thirty years and our government made us beg while sending billions to war, millions over seas for “relief” are you kidding we are not taking care of our own!
Please do this ASAP, just the thought of it brings hope but that is not enough–it needs to be done. I don’t like the idea of collecting from the Govt, but unfortunately this is what my family needs to survive until jobs or other opportunities begin to surface…

I have been following the plight of the unemployed being that I am a 99′r and there’s been very little to feel like we have been even noticed. Those whom are employed think that we are just sitting back and taking advantage of the situation. They couldn’t be more wrong. We are discouraged at every corner. We send out resume after resume on-line (which is a real disadvantage) we all get lost in the shuffle especially seniors like me. It’s hard enough to be rejected over and over but we must start at the bottom by applying for jobs that pay well under what we are accustomed to making and start over like we are 17 years old again. All that after using up all of our savings, losing our homes, and losing what we have worked for all of our lives. Bless Charles Schumers heart for fighting for us. Please push this through before they recess again for a month. We need this yesterday. The fact is that we unemployed are frightend at the prospect of losing our way of life and that we are plummeting into poverty. We need some hope by not being thrown out into the cold.

A member of another blog site pointed out that the media is more concerned over what Mel Gibson is spouting off about then covering the unemployed and we the 99ers + need to change that perhaps by marching on Washington. If 99ers can’t march then send emails to ABC CBS NBC PBS and CNN say 1 million at 5, 8 and 11 pm Eastern every day for two weeks .
This is sad! I am a 99er. Where are the jobs? They know for a fact there isn’t any job growth,,,but allow americans to go deeper in debt. At the age of 40, I am back living in my mothers home, with my child. I have been independent since leaving college. I had to apply for public assistance, and the only employment they can offer me is to clean the courts bathroom for my assistance, the welfare centers aren’t any help, they have you attend back to work programs that receive government dollars, just so people can sit there doing absolutely NOTHING. I want a job, if not give me back what I paid insurance for since THE AGE OF 16….this is crazy…I’m begging for help…when in fact, I paid taxes
Most of us so called 99′ers are for the most part are those mid era “Baby Boomer”.
Not close to retirement yet but with either a bit less or more than a decade before we reach 65. We all have worked hard our entire lives, and even have tried numerous ways to get employed again.
Though the most unfortunate part is how old we are right now. We are told that we are “too qualified”, or “there is nothing that we as a company feel would suit your skills and experience, all we want is a job. Money is any kind is a help. Ageism in this economy has really reared its ugly head, and the right wording during interviews or post interview conversations will get prospective employers out of potential law suits.
I’ve had no health insurance for my wife or myself in two years. Dental care is a priority for me but their is nothing that I can afford. I’m in the midst of renegotiating the length of my mortgage to extend well beyond what would be considered a normal retirement. This as a measure to keep my home.
Yet the politicians in Washington are worried about extensions that will be less than 400 dollars a week in my personal situation. Due for the most part to this now new mindset by elected officials of both parties of being cost effective in light of so many future government projects. Screw the working people who want a job but can’t get one.That’s not on the top of any of their lists.
I sympathize with the newly unemployed, but isn’t it worse for us 99ers who have now nearly gone through ever other financial resources we have had available just to make ends meet,and also keeping a roof over our heads,keeping the lights and heat on, and having food on the table.
Health care was a major battle in the house and senate. The need to help the unemployed became secondary. Though if there is no source of income coming in to help people survive. How are people going to stay healthy with food or living on the streets.
Billions of future taxes are earmarked for health care. Yet nothing substantive for those who have researched piles and piles of classified ads, have email sites for regular job postings, and no real current prospects.
Aide to other nations seems more important than giving those who helped this nation for the last three or four decades gain a little bit of dignity with additional funds to just make do. I’m more than certain all those liberals in Washington who crammed down all this expensive legislation aren’t going to find their way to my house to help me, or provide me a job with them.
So as the under projected million 99ers still out of work and our numbers growing daily. Are we as a nation really going to see the end of the tunnel as far as this current recession in the near future? I think “NOT”.

Thank you Senator Schumer for standing up for us 99ers. I’am turning 55 years old next month and still can’t find a job. I’ve been out work for least two years. I lost my unemployment benefits this past April. I was evicted from my apartment and had to bounce around to live in different places,it was a dam shame after all these years of working and paying taxes.I agree with my fellow 99ers that all this money is going overseas and us americans are truly being disrespected by our goverment.Something has to happen soon or protests will start like the 1960′s.

I had read the full article and they were saying which makes sense is that they had to do the one extension first. They can’t let millions go without help. They need to help this country by providing more jobs and more plans to help those who are elderly. There is so much need. If they do wait, it will be the desmise of our country – a country that belongs to the people. I am so happy to hear that someone in congress actually is concerned for the 99ers club. I too am a 99er who was forced to take a minimum wage job to feed my family. We are all in need of a fair wage paying job, but for now we really need some help from the government. At this time I want to wish those who are expecting checks to pray for those who are still in need.
Mr President PLEASE help the unemployed in any way possible, just to save our homes would be great. We really need help. I was looking for a job at lest from the last day February 1, 2009 my company give me the lay off. I sent more than 150 resumes. I did not get a job. I cannot believe this is hapenning to me. Where are the job for support ourselves and survive?????.

If they don’t do anything before they go on their 6 week vacation, I will have no other choice than resort to crime to put food on my table, and keep a roof over my head. I haven’t had a dime since April, and haven’t paid a bill since then either.
Crime will be a win/win situation for me. If I get away with it, I will be able to survive. If I get caught, I am looking at 3 meals a day, and a place to sleep at night.
