In times of high unemployment and economic recession, there will be more people receiving unemployment benefits for longer periods. That’s a correlation that those in opposition to extending unemployment benefits beyond 99 weeks fail to either recognize or worse, deliberately ignore.
It should go without saying that the deeper the recession, the more people that will be laid off from work. And like anything cyclic in nature, the steeper and longer the decline, the greater the chance that the ride back to the top will take longer.
The latest job figures released by the Dept of Labor show a surge in new claims for unemployment benefits. The chief economist for Moody’s Economy.com, John Lonski said “This is the latest reminder of a weak labor market, and the jump preserves worries regarding the adequacy of economic growth.”
James Picerno of Wall Street Pit writes in regards to the likelihood of jobless claims falling anytime soon: “One example can be found in the historical trend with job creation. In the wake of recessions over the past several decades, the net pace of job growth has been weakening after economic downturns. The fear is that this trend remains intact today. Given the deep losses in jobs, that trend threatens to bite deeper this time.”
As for the jobs that are being advertised, current statistics show that for every job opening there are 5.6 people applying to fill the position.
Given this bleak outlook for the job market, it’s time for both sides of politics to come to some sort of agreement quickly in extending unemployment benefits. The Government needs to offer hope and dignity to those jobless who have exhausted all tiers of unemployment extensions during this current economic down turn.
Those long term unemployed or 99ers as they’re known, now stand at nearly 7 million in number. These are persons who have exhausted all unemployment benefit tiers, and have been out of work for longer than 6 months. To call these people “lazy” or imply they’re not actively looking for work is to ignore the facts of this recession and the impact long term unemployment is having on them.
One wonders what it will take for both parties, in the House and the Senate, and President Obama himself, to address this growing issue. The long term unemployed are not going to magically disappear any time soon, so it makes sense, economically and morally, to pass the Tier 5 unemployment extension without further delays.
But then pigs will fly too.

The unemployment extension is great unless you are a ’99er’ like me.
I have had no income since May. I do not qualify for public assistance or PRC since my daughter just turned 18. I can not get help with rent or mortgage since I do not have an income. I have drained all my funds and my mortgage is now 4 months behind. I posted my resume the day after I lost my job with the state job database. If they can’t find me a job how can they blame me for being out of work. My resume is posted in all the available databases and I have alerts for any job I would qualify to send me emails. I check email all day and respond to every lead. I have been up at 2 am filling out online resumes account to apply for a position. Every business within an hour driving have a copy. So how is I am labeled lazy?
There are online articles say that unemployment will be a problem until 2012.
So what about the millions in my shoes?
99er’s, don’t give up come see at our blog, it’s called
www.tier5tostayalive.blogspot.com
I am thinking that I wish I could go to sleep and wake up and then have the life that I remember back.
I see people who type you must be doing alright because you have Internet, when the truth is that I am using wifi. I am leaching off someone just for Internet.
The media don’t talk about us 99ers, so without Internet I wouldn’t know what was going on.
No one cares about us, we are scum because we didn’t have millions of dollars before we got laid off.
Johnny Depp could loose his job and it wouldn’t really effect him, but us average Joe’s were living off what we did make when we were working. What we got off unemployment isn’t enough to keep everything up-to-date, but at least everything wasn’t getting turned off.
I will not acknowledge the ignorance of people who think we are lazy, it is obvious they don’t have a life, because if they did they would not be on the unemployment sites.
There needs to be a tier5 because people are suffering badly. I am a 99er and I have been without unemployment insurance since March 30,2010 and I am at a loss.
I have lost everything that I owned from working for many many years and I don’t have a clue what to next. I just feel like giving up but then I realize that god will not put more on you then you can bare.
I can’t even get the basic necessities because I have nothing. I go to family members that I can get things from but they don’t really have anything either. This is not the way I planned my life would be. I am going get back on the right track I am determined to do so.
I have been unemployed since April 13,2008 and I send my resume out on a daily basis. I have account with multiple jobs sites since I have been unemployed. I’ve gone on 3 interviews and that’s only because those are only employer’s that were interested in me.
I go on the interview everything goes well in the beginning of the interview. Once I tell them how long I have been unemployed, the entire interview takes a downfall, the interviewer whole demeanor change and I feel like its not fair to me because I’m not giving a fair chance and this depression was not brought on by me.
So why do I have to suffer I want to do is work anyway I don’t care where I want to be in the working Atmosphere again.
TO THE LEADER’S OF THE COUNTRY PLEASE STEP UP AND HELP THE MILLIONS OF AMERICAN’S WE ARE IN DESPERATE NEED OF HELP DON’T LET US DOWN IT IS SO HARD FOR US NOT BEING ABLE TO PROVIDE A LIVING FOR OURSELF AND FAMILY.

I will become one of the homeless I just lost my apartment nowhere to go. it was bad enough that I had no food to eat. no one will help you or offer you help when you do not have any income it is really sad how american treat one another
