Unemployed men and women across the nation are waiting for the Tier 5 unemployment extension. Multiple bills pending in both houses of Congress are being ignored despite recent suggestions that the extension of unemployment benefits be added to other, newer legislation that is set to provide assistance to small businesses and create jobs. As ’99er ladies and gentlemen exert themselves week after week to find employment, they drain their savings or do odd jobs around the neighborhood in order to get by.
A recent poll has revealed that many unemployed people are failing to take advantage of some government programs that could be benefiting them. One common oversight is the usage of an program known as HAUP — The Housing Affordable Unemployment Program. HAUP is an extension of the MHAP — the Making Home Affordable Program — which has helped homeowners obtain loan modifications to allow them to keep paying on their mortgages.
HAUP offers the ability for an unemployed homeowner to have his monthly mortgage payments reduced to a maximum of 31% of his income — generally around $400 for an unemployed person — for a minimum of three months. According to MakingHomeAffordable.gov:
To qualify, a homeowner must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- The mortgage must be a first lien mortgage, originated on or before January 1, 2009, and the unpaid principal balance must be equal to or less than $729,750 for a one-unit property. The property must be the homeowner’s principal residence. The mortgage has not been previously modified through a Home Affordable Modification. The homeowner was ineligible for a Home Affordable Modification. The homeowner is either behind on payments (but not by more than three consecutive months) or it is reasonably forseeable (sic) that the homeowner will fall behind. The total monthly mortgage payment is greater than 31 percent of the homeowner’s gross monthly income. If the payment is less, it is up to the servicer’s discretion if they will offer the program to the homeowner.
Unemployed homeowners know from long experience that there are simply no jobs available, with more than half of the population facing a jobs-to-seekers ratio of 5 to 1 — or, for entry-level jobs, as high as 30 to 1. With HAUP, a homeowner who is in danger of losing their house can achieve security for at least three months — more if he can negotiate with their mortgage holder.
All that sounds great, but there’s a major flaw that makes HAUP completely useless if you’re a ’99er, at least until the Tier 5 unemployment extension is passed. In order to apply for HAUP, there is one more bullet point you must meet:
The homeowner will be unemployed at the start of the forbearance period, and is able to document this because they will be receiving unemployment benefits in the month the forbearance period begins (even if the benefits expire before the forbearance period ends).
If you’ve already exhausted your unemployment benefits, you cannot access the benefits from HAUP, ironically because you can’t prove you’re unemployed. It would seem reasonable that some other method of establishing your inability to get a job would exist, but apparently, a 99er that is about to lose his house has no solace, even in an act specifically designed to help the unemployed keep their houses.
On the positive side, if the day comes with some intelligent, compassionate Congressperson finally gets the Tier 5 extension passed, HAUP will again become an option for any 99ers that receive benefits under the new structure. File your claims, and the day you get your first check, go to the MAHP website and sign up for HAUP. Three months of reduced payments (which are negotiable down to $0 if you’re canny) might not seem like a lot when the economy looks like it won’t get better in the foreseeable future, but knowing that you’ll still have a roof over your head next season has its benefits.
Let’s just hope the Tier 5 unemployment extension gets passed in time for “next season” to include the cold months.

I agree with you because I am about to lose my one room apartment out here no one care if you live in an apartment. I went for help last week and I was told to look for a shelter because they could not help me and I am a 99er and can not find a job or get any help to keep my apartment. I went for food stamp and they give me 118.00 for the hold month. I pray they will pass the bill to help the 99ers. There are no jobs out here and at my age it’s hard to find a job they are looking for college studen or anyont that is under 50 years of age.

All the INSURANCE I’ve ever bought had “limits of coverage”. Employer’s contributions towards UI buy 26 weeks of “coverage”. The additional 73 weeks of benefits have been charged to our maxed-out federal credit card. I don’t detect any limits here. That’s not insurance, it’s a transfer payment.

What about us who do not own homes? What about the people who rent. I have yet to seen one program to help us. While I will be out on the streets before this extension can be passed the only help is for homeowners. What about the rest of us who are suffering just like the rest????

I personally don’t think that’s correct. Unemployment should be there for any unemployed person struggling to find a job. I mean it is insurance. I can’t take being lied to, especially to my face…i officially have gotten all my hopes up. I have exhausted my benefits and have been without income for 2 months now. I borrowed money for rent but have no where else to turn for my other bills.
I have had about a dozen interviews in the past 5 months and every single one tell me i will get a call and never do, but this last one took the cake..the interview was spectacular, he shook my hand and said i would be getting a job offer in 5 days and that I would need a physical and orientation was this week on the 16th…that was over 2 weeks ago..nothing in the mail, i called twice and no response to my voicemails…I even asked the lady that set up my interview what time orientation was and she said she knew nothing of any orientation for this month
What a discouraging and disheartening thing to put someone in my predicament through…I feel at a complete loss for words…I’m a strong person but now its to the point where i dont know what else to do…my father goes into the hospital next week, he and my mom are getting evicted for no apparent reason and I really wanted to help them financially when i got this job.

I’ve run out of unemployment, cashed in my 401k and am now living on what is left of our savings. So, I’m as disgusted and angry as anyone else on this page. But, the most disturbing part of this sad episode is that the government doesn’t care about the middle class. Even when the middle class is on the verge of becoming a thing of the past. Look for a new America in the near future. One that resembles an early episode of the Waltons. There the grandparents became a burden on the family, having no money or anywhere else to go. I live in my vehicle….thnx to the govt and all the 450 businesses that got my resume and I even filled out applications for some of them not to hire me. I am really looking forward here in Michigan to freeze once winter gets here. The waiting list for housing is 18 months ! At least back in Reno Nevada it wouldnt be so cold. Hello Fellow 99er’s I was just reading on another post about someone stating that the government has over 30 billion dollars unused Stimulus money that the government is just sitting on. Why are they just sitting on this money?
This money is what we were told to help the 30 MILLION Unemployed Americans which is including the 99er’s. So What I read was that this guy who was a business analyst. He states that if the United States Government used the 30 billion dollars to be used this way. Each Unemployed American which is 30 MILLION these people should get 30 MILLION DOllARS.
However It Cannot be used for cash. So you wouldn’t be able to pull out cash at an ATM. But, you will be able to purchase goods. Which would indeed make the Economy stronger. Which would create jobs due to the high supply and demand. If you think this is a crock then I must be reading something that just sounds perfect.

This is retarded. I’m a 99er. I dont know about the rest of you but I have been looking at these sites for a couple of weeks. I have read more than enough to know that things are getting to a point where we are just sitting and waiting. For what I ask. No one is doing anything. There are more than a million of us that can easily say we have nothing to lose.
Why are we on a forum complaining from our chairs instead of doing what the people that got us here did. They are so called lobbying. Lets put ourselves in the same position. How did we make a point that we are not going to sit back and take this s&^t like were expendable by standards to someone’s pocket book? Lets meet up on there doorstep so we cant be ignored. Its our country. We are there boss.
We have been paying there bills for years with our tax dollars. How dont act like it will get done for you. They look at poles to see what will effect there seat. If we show up all at once with our broke homeless and starving selves who can say that its not a problem with over a million people. You think the news will not report this. I dont think so. It will make a difference.
Organise now! Make a point before it is too late and your left in the street in a town that has turned there back on you for there own benefit. Dont be a doormat. A closed mouth doesn’t get fed. Stop talking about and be about it!
The Housing Affordable Unemployment Program is a joke. I tried for over 1 year and a half working with Bank Of America. After faxing the paper work 5 times cause they kept loosing it and dozens of phone calls spending hours on the phone with them finally denied cause you have to prove 9 months of future unemployment. I told them the the extensions are only good for 6 mouths at a time. So they said after all the time a aggravation I was not going to be excepted into the program. P.S. In Virgina we are called the 77ers. We didn’t get the 99 weeks.

Yes, I’m a 99er and I would love to show up on their door but I lost my vehicle and I have no transportation or anything else for that fact. I live back with my mother, but I am not able to do much of anything especially having no transportation to get anywhere, and thank God that I can mail in my ballot which is sitting on my table now. I’m voting for a no namer, someone that is running that has never been in office.
It’s going to be hard to change these compaines that out sourse over seas paying workers $1.50-2.50 an hr.
THE FAT CATS upper managment have had their pockets stuffed with money too long buying dozens of homes in only places we dream about and cars that sit in the garage and get waxed everyday.

Where is all that extra money going to the ceo’s, blue collar and bonues they already have more money then they could ever spend. Greed!! All the products they ship back to the U.S have you noticed the prices are still the same or higher huge profits. More and more companies moving over seas every week. I have seen this mentioned on posts from time to time. I am on UI now. Why can’t the government let us do community service for our UI benefits. Even picking up trash from the roadsides would be alright with me. And for the people that say we are lazy, sitting in front of computer 10 to 12 hours a day looking for a job is NO FUN. About the best you can get is a rejection email if you are lucky.
Nothing is going to change folks until we take this to the streets in whatever form it takes. The media has chose not to react and the Gov’t stands by watching to see just how much resentment is really out there. Until its (in your face) demonstrations in DC nothing is going to change. You would think 15 million people would have a rather loud voice but for some reason it does not. Do you know that it would only take about one to two million to completely shut down Washington I mean bring it to a stand still. But I fear the worse is yet to come and by that I mean someone will get hurt or die God forbid before we are taken seriously. Folks remember one thing for certain, “There is no more dangerous animal on the planet than a man or woman who has nothing left to lose” Think about it fols.

Storming the castle with torches in hand, is not the way to bring about a resolution to this most disheartening situation. We must keep our wits about us and pursue peaceful avenues of action that don’t include destructive reason and motive!!!

Being unemployed is bad enough, but having our own government pushing us to the side and not helping us is the worst.
I always believed in the system and our government, but now I must say that I am ashamed.
We the unemployed are suffering, losing everything that we have worked so hard to achieve…a roof over our families heads, food on the table, and clothes on our backs.
Now we are losing it all at no fault of our own and the government is debating the issue about given the people help.
The HAUP is a living nightmare.I lost my job in March of 2010, applied for the HAUP (Home Affordability Unemployment Program) through Bank of America in August 2010. It takes a REALLY REALLY SUPER long time to get approved for this program, at least through Bank of America it does. It is October 1st now – when I talked to them today (I talk to them on a weekly basis) they said it would be another 60 days for the underwriter to approve his portion and then another 60 days for the final approval. So that means we won’t know until until Feb if we are approved or not. That’s just crazy! The purpose of the program is to help the unemployed but if it takes 7 months to get approved, then I can’t see how this program really helps. And, yes, B of A also lost our paperwork (similar to the comment made by an earlier poster) and they keep changing their story as to timelines each time I talk to them. The HAUP is a living nightmare!! It really is.
