A 10-year-old girl in Spain gave birth to a child last week, the product of her relationship with another minor in her town according to an AP report.
It happened in Jerez de la Frontera, and officials in the town are now deliberating on whether or not to take custody of the child, or allow the baby to remain with the girl and her parents.
When asked for comment, her mother made the shocking defense of saying that it “happens all the time” in Spain. According to the unnamed girl, she is not the only one of her peers to get pregnant, and 10-years-old is not so young to have a baby.
I don’t know whether this is true or not…I guess it could be. But I have trouble believing that Spain has an epidemic of girls under the age of 13 having babies. It seems like 10-years-old would be too young for many girls (though not all) to even conceive.
But whether this is “normal” or not, there are serious risks involved with something of this nature. Not only are there physical risks, but psychological and mental ones involved for both the baby and the mother.
Thankfully, in this case the physical problems seem to be minimal. There are still risks of issues developing or showing over time, but they are both said to be resting and healthy. But what about the mental affects?
Whatever the case, this is definitely one of the more shocking cases to develop, and rivals that of little Alfie Patten and Tyler Barker from the UK.
