First Transgendered Judge Makes History in California

After a rare vote that was decided by the people of Alameda County, Victoria Kolakowski made history this week after it was announced that she would be the first ever completely “out” transgendered judge in the country.

At first, the results seemed uncertain. Though she kept a steady lead through the campaign and voting process the final tallies have only been released with some agencies, such as the non-profit groups that helped support her campaign.

Kolakowski had an unofficial tally reading on Wednesday of 115,570 votes, or 50% of the overall elective pool. That is several thousand more than opponent Deputy District Attorney John Creighton.

But she was adamant about the fact that it has nothing to do with biological gender.

If you look at the election coverage from the San Francisco Chronicle and Oakland Tribune it makes it sound likeI ran as the transgender candidate in the race. That is not why people voted for me and not why people didn’t vote for me,” she told the Bay Area Reporter.

People made their decisions based on who they thought had the best experience and was the best fit for the job.
